I know this section it’s more for upgrade stuff, but in my case I want to do the opposite, downgrade my zwave chip to 2.78 firmware.
I am running a veralite using UI6 that came with 3.20 out of the box and now I have 10 zwave devices with complex scenarios and multiple apps running. I recently purshased an Aeon Z-stick that I have been able to include as a secondary controller (showing faulty in Vera though). My main goal is principaly to offload the veralite from some scene and apps and running them on the secondary controller using the promising Jeedom app.
As many other people experimented, 3.20 and 2.78 do not behave well together. Especially 2.78 needs a SUC/SIS to work correctly as a secondary and also, events are not showing well on it.
So, the question is what are the risks doing this downgrade on the veralite side. Do I loose all my devices and implying reconfiguring all my scenes also? Can I easlly revert back to 3.20?
I saw in multiple discussions that people already did this downgrade, like here by Garretwp, but dont tell what is the impact doing so.
I have done it a number of times trying to get my Danfoss thermostats to be nice… In my experience there has never been any problems. Except for the Danfoss units I have Fibaro stuff, Stellaz and some other energy meters and switches.
I followed the instructions found on mios. I have used this upgrade/downgrade a number of times to reset the Vera to master (somehow this can be lost sometimes…). I now have two Veras one running thermostats and 2.78 and another for the rest running 3.20 (I have never noticed any difference)
Thanks for the info. I was not sure if it’s a risky operation or not because in the mios documentation, at least the following one, it’s for those that are upgrading from 2.78 to 3.20. In this procedure they clearly say that a 2.78 zwave backup is required to downgrade from 3.20:
Downgrading to z-wave version 2.78
Unplug Vera’s power and reconnect it.
When Vera starts up, uncheck the “Use Z-Wave version 3.20 instead of 2.78” box, close the popup and save.
Wait a couple minutes and confirm that the Z-Wave version is now 2.78.
Then choose the Advanced option from the toolbox, select the backup tab, check the option “Restore Dongle”, click “Choose File”.
Select the backup file you created, and click “Restore”.
Wait about 10 minutes and everything should be back to what it was before you upgraded to version 3.20.
It was about a year ago that I was doing this (had a lot of trouble with the silly way that the Vera handles battery devices) so I don’t really remember if I did the restore. I know i followed the instructions and they worked. I have done lots of restores from backups and that works great. I really recommend doing backups regularly including the z wave network. With that you can recover and even transfer to another Vera. About a month ago my main Vera forgot all z wave devices But a restore got it all back…
Thanks again for the information. The only problem, is that in my case I had never run in 2.78 so I dont have a backup for this version. I will give it a try but it does seem that a backup is required if you want to restore the zwave network.
I recall that i saw in another thread that 3.20 and 2.78 do not save the network topology the same way but it’s not clear at all.
Anyway from what I hear it’s easy to go back to 3.20 using a vera and zwave restore.
I just downgraded to 2.78 because with 3.20 I could not include any new devices with 3.20 (I could not get z-wave to enter into learning mode).
I still have to see what the disadvantages are for my devices, but so far it seems to run ok.
Finally went ahead and downgraded. Did not lost any device even the door lock (with security key) survived the operation. So far so good, it’s stable and fast. Even more faster than with 3.20 and seems to use less memory. Is it possible that Vera routing and 3.20 use more resources than 2.78 because I have remarked that scenes trigger faster with 2.78 than 3.20.
Thanks again with all your suggestions.
