Z-wave based Temperature control for water Heater

Is this possible? If so some experienced folks out there - could you please guide me in the right direction…Thanks in advance for your help.

If I’m not mistaken my water heater have notches that lets you set the temp in notches…I’m assuming most water heaters do the same thing??

For gas water heaters, there appear to be a few devices that ‘Turn the dial’ via some sort of external control.

Search Google for ‘home automation gas water heater’ to see what I mean. Some time back there was a similar custom job on Hack-a-day.

For electrical heaters, there are a few threads here that cover driving a 60A relay/contactor from a standard appliance module, and using that to fundamentally turn them on/off when needed.

That said, none of the above will tell you the temp, so you’ll need to calibrate either type of system if you go that route.

Oh, and as you said in PM, instant Hot water services somewhat bypass the problem (in the right climate)

Resurrecting a oldish thread with a slightly different question.

We have a gas water heater that uses electric spark (no pilot light.) I was thinking that it might be nice to use an appliance module to turn it off for vacations, etc. What I don’t know is whether this will mess with the set point controller on the heater itself. I figure, at a minimum, the controller will reset to factory preset temp.

Anyone have a module on their tanks for vacations? How has it worked out for you?
