Where are you located? For a U.S. installation you basically need the following:
For outlets: you need a line, a neutral, and a ground. The load is the device that plugs into the outlet.
For dimmer switches (incandescent lights or truly dimmable fluorescent or LED): typically you need line, load, and ground. Some brands may require a neutral but most don’t, unless you are wiring 3-way (or more) switches. In that case the auxiliary switches require neutrals.
For On/Off (non-dimming) lights: you need line, load, neutral and ground.
Note the terminology: line is the incoming hot wire, load is the outgoing hot to the light (or other load).
For wiring diagrams the best answer is to pick the brand of switches and outlets you plan to use and download the wiring diagrams from the manufacturer’s website since they will be different for different brands.
