I found a wind sensor called “Fakro Windsensor ZWD”:
It uses Z-Wave technology but they say you have to use their control device.
Is this device supported by Vera?
Any suggestions for other sensors are welcome as well.

The device works if connected by wire to the ZWMP weather module.
If it works with the Vera Lite - I don’t know yet.
for my case, would be good an american frequency version…
Ok new idea.
I found a wind sensor which will output a frequency. Maybe I could read it out with a Fibaro RGBW.
It might need some voltage that is wired through the sensor. What do you think?

Proprietary wired connections for Wind and Rain sensors attached to their main weather module which then is able to control chain based Z-wave motors to open and close windows.
Those Wind and Rain sensors do not have Z-wave. In addition it states that this Wind sensor only triggers when it reaches 40km/h. This is not a measurement device but a simple on/off relay dependent on the 40km/h trigger.
This is how I read this stuff but I have to admit that their information on their website is very limited and their pictures are super small.
I installed the http://www.wunderground.com/ plugin from Vera and I got this from a weather station very close to my home. Maybe this could help to measure your winds in your areas guys.
I will probably going to do that. Looks like I could take several stations nearby so I could even be prepared from upcoming wind, rain oder thunderstorms. And if internet breaks I can just go to the safe side and close.

Side note: The free service from wunderground offers 3 days of forecast and optional free history. If you want longer forecast you have to subscribe with a free and they offer other services as well. I took the free of charge option.
Thank you. I think this could be a good plan:
If temperature inside the house is above 23?C AND sun is shining according to 4 stations nearby - some shades close and sun protection outside goes out.
If one of the stations has wind over 40 km/h OR it is expected to rain - sun protection outside goes in and shades stay closed.
I think this really makes sense as I can take data from airports or from people who have way more professional equipment than I could buy for Z-Wave.
Just a note that for drop-arm awning wind sensors, I worked with @Strangely where we added a Tilt Switch to the contacts on a Z-Wave Door sensor. When the awning shakes excessively, enough to trip the tilt switch, the Door Sensor will send a tripped signal to Vera, then Vera can close the awning.
You can play with the orientation of the tilt switch to it to trip at the proper time. I don’t think he used a Mercury-free switch for safety, here are examples Amazon.com : tilt switch
With a RFXCOM Transceiver you can receive all kind of weather sensors for instance almost the Oregon Scientific WGR800 wind sensor.
