To the forum I ask which do you prefer a wifi or Zwave thermostat?
I prefer Zwave due to the security and mesh network. I also feel it is harder to hack than the wifi versions.

This is a few days old, but why do you care about someone hacking them? Are you referring to hacking from outside of the house?
If they can hack the wifi thermostat, they would more than likely be able to hack your home wifi network… If they can hack your network, your ZWave is on the same network and really offer nothing over wifi…
Correct. Security is important.

Security aside, is there any benefit of a wifi vs. Z-wave thermostat?
Personally, I prefer a wifi Model. I know I can adjust and view a z-wave model via a vera mobile app, but I had a 3m-50 and now a Nest and I just like having a separate app that I can adjust it or check it quickly when I’m not at home (since the sites are updated by the thermostats and I am not affected by my local internet connection speed at that given moment).
Also, because the Logitech Harmony Ultimate now can talk to the Nest, I can easily check and control the thermostat from my living room remote (not that I plan on doing this alot). You can even adjust the thermostat based on your “activity”.
Wifi = wider communication including external application to manage.
Z-wave requires and control point e.g Vera as a gateway.

You can control your Zwave Thermo via Veramate or Vera Mobile. Veramate is the better of the two.
This is what worries me about Nest: Hello, Dave. I control your thermostat. Google's Nest gets hacked | VentureBeat
I think what is really going to decide it for me is that wifi thermostat is better for resale. Not that I plan on selling my house for the next 15-20 years but it’s nice not to have to do it twice.
The downside is that you rely on a plugin to work with Vera.
Looks like they used physical access to the Nest to do that hack.
You can do the same with Vera, simply by being on the same Network/LAN (without physical access to the Vera unit)… And it’s a lot less work
Physical is a start. Point being that security is important.
I like Wi-Fi thermostats, but only ones that work over the LAN and don’t require an internet connection to work. Some of the Wi-Fi thermostats (ex. Nest, and a few others) require Vera to relay commands over the internet via the thermostat manufacturers servers.
If you’re comfortable with Google / Nest having a view inside your home (via motion sensor / thermostat controls) then this is not an issue. For me, I’d rather make it a little more difficult for them to find out what I’m doing.
Also, if communication goes through the manufacturers servers, there’s always the possibility that they’ll try to monetize the connection with monthly fees, either to the developers or the users.

I vote Z-wave due to power requirements, and standard Vera z-wave implementation. I have three of the Honeywell z-wave thermostats…
I’ll also vote z-wave as I have several Trane thermostats.
Those of you with a Trane thermostat, are you able to set it to show Fahrenheit in VeraLite? the panel of the thermostat shows the temp in F, but in VeraLite and any control apps the temp shows in C and can only set it in C.
Yes all of my tranes show in F. (7 total in 2 houses)
And I happily use Ui5.

I think there was or is a UI6 problem on this. Not sure if UI7 still has it but I’m sure it does as it only worse then UI6.
UI5 the only one that’s working really. Once you go to UI6 or UI7 your bound to find little things like this that don’t work right. Less things function in UI7 so no reason to upgrade.
Funny…I wanted a Z-wave one, and I ended up buying a Nest to have both. I use it more with its own app than I do through Vera though. The Nest app has more info and functions that aren’t integrated into Vera like scheduling, usage history, and settings. I also bought a 2GIG CT100 but didn’t like it. It was pretty basic overall. I don’t know about others but if you buy a full featured thermostat with all the bells and whistles, even if its usable through Vera, you’ll probably end up using the dedicated app anyway through wifi. If you just want to set the temperature, it probably doesn’t matter.
