Where are programs stored?

Hello all,

I’m considering Vera for some simple automation and have a question. This should have been obvious, but I can’t find the answer in the manuals/FAQs/forum searches etc.

Where are the programs (timers, etc) stored? Simply put, if I make a timer to turn on a light at a certain time, is this stored in the Vera, or do I need a PC connection to be active? What happens to that timer if power is interrupted?

I see that there is some flash in there but no hard drive. Are programs stored in non-volatile memory?

It all happens in Vera, you only need a PC on the network to configure the Vera (add devices, apps, plugins) and create your desired automation.

It is OK with a power loss but many of us put them on a UPS for protecting it from surges and to keep it from being interrupted for short duration power loss.

What kinds of things do you run into on short power interruptions?

I noticed on the the Veralite it has AA batteries, and the Vera has an external battery pack. What are they for?

They are for running Vera on battery to include and exclude devices. It can not be used as a means of power for battery backup.

So, are you saying all programs/timers/config are stored in Flash? Sorry for asking, but I’m the hardware guy. I like to know how things work.

What kinds of problems do you see when power gets interrupted? My primary automation function is timers for lights, so I want to make sure that the Vera recovers gracefully when the power goes out, and I’m not home to reprogram things.

All vera’s data is contained in a configuration file that is saved on the Vera’s flash memory. Many of us put our Vera’s on some sort of ups / battery backup. If the power goes out, Vera will simply start up and continue on it’s marry way. However, scenes that were scheduled during the outage will not get run. There is a plugin PLEG (Program Logic Event Generator) that will allow for it’s actions / schedules to resume.
