When will the new version arrive?

Since I learned how wonderful convenient it is to run a HA for two weeks without any problem (still on 616), I really flinch from upgrading again with a beta version.

On the other hand I like to benefit from the functional progress we see with the 9xx releases and yes, I’m a bit anxious for the new version.

So my question is: MCV, when will you release the official version?

Not only when will the new version arrive, but how about the screenshots of the native iPhone app?

No answer, MCV?

So, what do you call an official version?
Is 939 not official enough? Or do you mean a stable one?

…a non beta version. A version that appears in Vera’s download section.

You are running the latest version.
Running Version : 1.0.616
Latest Version : 1.0.616

if you upgrade to luup the latest released beta version shows up on your download page when released…

as far as when luup will be officially released, i fully support “when it’s done”… software development is unpredictable, fixing one thing may break something else, and it should not be released until it is bug free, giving dates just sets unrealistic expectations.

Thanks, BOSSTON. In real life I’m a CIO. I guess I know a bit about software projects.

All professional ones have a plan - right? I’m pretty sure MCV has one.
I disagree with you that software development is unpredictable. You will not know which bug appears but you know that there will be some. And after some releases you know how long fixing a bug and regression testing will take and you can estimate the number of bugs. That’s engineering, not applied arts.

huwu,

I have to disagree, I work in an engineering department for a small company (maybe not quite as small as MCV) but… we always have a hard time making the dates that we would like to make. Something always pops up that sets things back. I would have to say that MCV has this same problem (based on dates they have given in the past).

I usually either give 1 of 2 options. 1. A date that I think is almost double what I think is needed to get the project finished to account for problems (this way I get done “early” most of the time and everyone is happy). Or 2. No date… its done “when its done” and this is usually what we tell customers. Its not the best solution, but its better than giving dates, missing them multiple times, and disappointing people more.

I think these unknown problems and delays are especially evident when working with other peoples code and devices that you have no control over such as in MCVs situation where they are working with hundreds of interoperable devices on hardware they didn’t design. Smaller teams (such as MCV) are much more prone to delays as well since the team members are more diverse in their skill sets (people go on vacation, people get sick) and usually the workload is not evenly distributed among team members.

All I am saying is… they can (and probably will) give you a date, but they probably won’t hit it unless they start realistically thinking about development dates and delays. I would rather them just say “when its done”.

Just to add my 2 cents, I would say Soon™

Reading your post again, I think we agree and are on the same page here, but we are thinking as engineering managers… not developers.

And we talk to the vera developers on this forum… developers give optimistic dates, it is the managers job to interpret those and give realistic ones. MCV probably doesn’t have someone who does that full time. I could be wrong…

@huwu

As B0SST0N said, here how it looks:

@BOSSTON: We are close together. But all I want to know is just: is it planned for next month or next year? They should be able to give this information.

@denix. I know, but these are betas. MCV has a limited support for these releases. E.g. the first public beta .899 has had a bug concerning my window coverings. I still don’t know if MCV fixed it or not because there is a lack of documentation.

A general problem for us European users is, that MCV has no possibility to test with (all) European devices. So what they can do is to test the popular US ones.
That ends up in a risk for me. I updated to .899. The result was that all my window coverings kept down. My family is very appreciative but that was not acceptable for them. The downgrade than to .616 was not successful because the restore didn’t work and I had to set up all again from scratch. More than 25 devices with 22 scenes in 12 rooms. That is were fun ends!

So that brings me back to my question: when will there be a Luup version that is as stable an reliable like the .616?
