I have been looking are user comments on various sites about the thermostats they have purchased to work with their z-wave controller and they are all over the lot. Any non-manufacturer comments on which is the best to buy?
I have four Trane units. Very happy with them.
I have the Trane unit and while I was initially very happy with it I’m now about to replace it with the Filtrete WiFi unit. The Trane worked great over the winter with the heat but doesn’t work well with my A/C. It seems to turn the A/C on and off too frequently, and even turns off before the set temperature is reached. I thought the problem was with my A/C but it was checked and is working fine (according to my HVAC service). They thought the thermostat was likely not working correctly.
One feature I really liked about the Trane is the fan cycle setting, where you can have the fan turn on and off to circulate air without the A/C (or heat) coming on. That is great in the summer to keep the temperature in the house more consistent, and therefore uses less A/C overall. I like it better than just leaving the fan on all day; the cycle feature lets you control the on/off times. I will miss that when I remove the Trane.
After my A/C experience with the Trane I can’t recommend it any longer.
Trane has deltas to adjust the set point on/off, but every time I try, I don’t think they work correctly for A/C.
The “cooling stage 1 on delta” is supposed to be how far above the set point the A/C turns on.
The “cooling stage 1 off delta” is supposed to be how far below the set point the A/C turns off.
I haven’t tried in a while, and going from memory, here is how I think it should work.
Assume the set point is 72, and each delta is 1 degree. A/C comes on when the temp hits 73, runs until the temp hits 71, and waits for the temp to rise again. I have never gotten that to work.
Here is what I have seen.
Assume the set point is 72, and each delta is 1 degree. A/C comes on when the temp hits 73, runs until the temp hits 72, and waits for the temp to rise again. This essentially means the A/C keeps a 1 degree (or smaller) swing. Any small rise in temperature turns it on. It never seems to use the “delta off” when it does it’s thing.
I need to experiment more, and see if I can a find a happy medium, in which I leave the “off delta” at one, and use a larger “on delta” to get the cycling correct. Luckily it doesn’t get that warm here, and I’m making more of an effort this summer to use more fans instead of the A/C. Now that I have my temp equalizing between the upstairs and downstairs automatic, this should be easier.
Hi PurdueGuy,
I tried using the minimum run time setting to keep the cycling down but that didn’t really fix the problem. I’ll try fooling around with the cooling stage 1 deltas before I open the package on the Filtrete wifi thermostat. Thanks for the feedback.
I just recently changed my Trane’s Cooling Delta from 1 to 2 … works perfectly!
Which delta? On or Off? Or both?

Just an FYI, I threw out three Filtrete WiFi units and replaced them with the Trane units because they were truly garbage. If you’re having issues with the Trane ones, and you want to switch, I would avoid the Filtrete ones.
Do you have both heating and cooling on them?
Thanks,

And positive or negative? I was fooling around with the deltas today and noticed they go both positive and negative. So, does a delta of -1 on the off point mean it shuts off 1 degree colder than the set point (set point - 1) or 1 degree warmer than the set point (set point - (-1))?
I wish the user’s guide had an example.
Since I wanted to change the deadband for my cooling… I used Cooling Delta Stage 1 and as I stated, changed from 1 to 2. this means it will have a deadband of 2 degrees, not the default 1 degree.

Yes. No issues with either heat or cooling.

I’ve had two Trane units for both heating and cooling for more than year. Very happy with them.
I’ll try again tomorrow, but I think mine has only positive deltas. When it was acting up, I tried going below 0 without success (I thought). Did you do anything special, or just lee hitting the down/- key?
Mine definitely doesn’t have negative numbers.
C Delta Stg 1 ON will go from 1 up
C Delta Stg 1 OFF will go from 0 up
I’m trying it again.

Interesting. On my thermostat C Delta Stg 1 OFF will go from -1 to 8. And yes, I just hit the “-” key when at 0 and it goes to “-1”. I checked and my thermostat firmware is version 1.01.40. What version is yours?
Mine is version 1.00.13. I guess they changed something!
Yeah, with the Trane’s it’s always good to compare firmware versions, as I think there are some differences related to Z-Wave also (e.g. in relation to fan control).
We have one trane unit on our 2 year old Trane Hybrid Heat pump and it’s worked flawlessly.
The reason I chose the Trane is that it has EHeat mode to lock out the compressor of the Heat Pump when I want to use the Gas Furnace only. I just wish I could select that mode from Z-wave. There is a bug report filed on this limitation.
