What the Heck Happened Last Night...

I have had my Vera now for about 45 days. The first few weeks were just total frustration but everyone here told me to sit tight and things would settle down and they were right, things did settle down and for a good 20 day period everything worked as expected and I had a green smiling house on my Vera dashboard. However today, 6 devices have come up no longer connected. I looked in the repair report from last night and every device configured normally with no issues reported. These 6 devices are spread all over the house, and are both powered and battery devices. Additionally, and this is the weird part, I now 8 new motion sensors with generic names (like they were newly created) and I have not added any new devices in several weeks. All of those mysterious new motion sensors (which don’t really exist) seem to be operating correctly, very weird. It’s like my Veralite had a brain fart…any ideas…?

When your Vera does a nightly Z-Wave “heal”, this can happen. Most of us (I think) turn off the nightly heal. Look in the Z-Wave settings, and uncheck that middle box “Use Vera routing instead of Z-Wave (requires 4.5)”.

But, you say, that box is already unchecked! This explains why the problem only popped up recently. If your Vera’s firmware was recently updated, MIOS decided to incorporate a heal in the update process (sigh).

The “Use Vera Routing” box is unchecked and has been for some time now. I have NOT updated firmware in several weeks.

I don’t think you can completely undo the nightly heal as I have found out. I researched and tried to turn off the heal and an investigation into lots of searches indicate that when unchecked, you won’t do a nightly heal if during that day no sensors reported a communication failure. However if one did fail during the day the nightly heal would still occur.

If I’m wrong please fact check me, just my experience after looking at logs and heal reports.

It would be an easy fix if the nightly heal was just another crontab entry… but no such luck!

Agreed.

After much frustration, I decided to just leave the VeraEdge running, waiting for the next firmware release…

Still no new firmware, but now I have one temp sensor, one power meter and nine security sensors, all reporting good. They do NOT exists and I can not delete them.

And, the Lutron RA2 plugin no longer responds. Tried cycling power to both Lutron and VeraEdge. It is now reliably NOT functional.

Where to start (over)…??? And then what, be a sitting duck for a repeat.

What to do?

Go to the backup page under settings and restore from back up right before the trouble started there should be two weeks worth of the nightly backups that happen for you automatically. That should fix your problems.

From there make sure you take a backup with a z-wave backup any time you add a new device or mess with your scenes, and save that off somewhere handy. Sometimes things will go sideways and you won’t notice until after the two weeks so there will not be a good backup on the server. Having a locally saved backup will make your life happy.
