What are my possibilities with this door lock?

Hi everyone,

I move inside my new condo a few months ago and I installed pretty much everything. The switches, plugs, electric curtains, motion detectors and alarm system are all done.

My problem is my door lock. The door in this new condo is way different than my previous condo.

My door lock is a mortise Lock exactly like the one in this video :

What would be the best zwave door lock to buy to replace this door lock?

I would contact Schlage as they would be the best qualified to answer your questions.

I’m wondering if a deadbolt with a handle set could be used.

Much like my sliding glass doors, I don’t they make one to fit that type of lock yet.

I also hope I could replace the lock with a deadbolt and a handle set, but the problem is that the current space inside the door will need to be filled before I could install a new door lock… Also, if I need to remove it in the future and go back to the original, I will have a hard time doing it…

Is the door metal as in the video?

How about unscrewing the hinges and removing the door, storing it away and putting in regular door?

Yeah, I could do that, but the door is a 8.5 feet tall oversized wood door. So basically, around 800$ to 1000$ to get another one if it’s not more. That will be my last choice if I don’t have any other options…

Well you don’t have any z-wave Lock options that fit that. That’s a given.

So leaves only 3 options I see so far.

  1. was already said is to replace the door.

  2. Modify your door to fit a normal lock. Since it’s wood I don’t think this is impossible to fill and redrill.

  3. To scrap the Z-wave lock Idea.

Now #3 can mean 2 things. Forget about it completely (as most of us have done on our sliding doors) or since your using a commercial building type lock I’m thinking you can use a magnetic striker (like in buildings where they buzz you in) on the frame side. Your style of door lock is made for that. Nothing on the door would change.

After you got that hooked up then all you need is a away to open it from the outside. For me right now I’m playing with Arduino interfaced to VERA. For about about 30.00 you can get an Arduino board (uno, Nano, Or micro) and a RFID reader with cards or use your NFC phone to open the door. You can also use a keypad mounded with the RFID reader for both options.

The Arduino plugs into Vera VIA usb or Ardunio can be plugged into the network and VERA just needs the IP address. There is a plugin for Arduino to work in VERA. And once that is installed and connection made you can have VERA use it like any other Z-wave device. Log, auto lock, unlock, unlock threw a VERA app or what ever.

What about a device like Lockitron, August (only bluetooth), or Danalock?

I haven’t read much about them in the last few months. However, they might be an option if you are willing to wait and let them mature a bit more.

It might be possible but I’m thinking those wont fit around the deadbolt. I would check size specs first. Mortise locks have the dead bolt and lever in one assy and they are not very far from each other. A large box around the dead bolt like the Lockitron might not clear the door handle.

The magnetic striker seems like the best solution to me.

If you didn’t want to go that way for some reason, I would just install a z-wave deadbolt in a new hole and leave the existing mortise lock unlocked.
Heck, if it were me, I might do both magnetic striker and z-wave deadbolt.

You could use a mortise to cylindrical converter, such as the bestaccess 83KA2A or 83KA2B and then use a standard cylindrical z-wave lever lock… or use the adapter and install a passage lock and add a z-wave deadbolt above the mortise lock… or use the adapter and install both a z-wave level lock and add a z-wave deadbolt.

You should also be able to retain the existing mortise lock and replace the existing lock cylinder/thumbturn assembly with a z-wave deadbolt that has a rectangular or cross shaped driver bar to connect to the lock cam… although this will require some modification to secure the lock cam onto the driver bar…

Thanks for all the idea. The Lockitron seems to be a good choice, but my concern is the space between the lock and the handle… I will reproduce the size of the Lockitron with a paper and see if the space is enough.

If the space is not enough, I will look with the adapter to convert mortise lock to normal lock. Pretty much the option I have left.

I found a device compatible with my door! This model : Vision ZM1702 use by default a mortise lock. I have contact the compagny and I will receive an answer next week if they have a US version of this type of lock. As of today, it’s the only compagny that has donc mortise zwave door lock.

I just hope they will answer with a positive answer.

You have been presesnted with many options. The one you provided doesn’t come in the US and doesn’t work worth a crap in EU either.
