Anyone have suggestions on how to monitor a temperature probe like the HAI 14A00-8 Water Temperature Sensor, with Vera? How would I interface the temp probe? Thanks
could you figure out a way to get a sensor to activate one of these:
dont think you could get a temperature readout but maybe you could find some hardware that you could pick setpoints for it to indicate it has hit?
and then add an insteon interface to the vera? (not sure if vera’s insteon plugin can RECEIVE though…
I figured I would use one of the INSTEON Low Voltage / Contact Closure Interfaces for closing the pool heater loop, however, I need to get the temperature reading to Vera first so I can use the Temperature reading to open and close that loop.
Anyone know of how to get a temperature reading to Vera from a pool/body of water? Ideally, a thermostat located inside the house (within relative proximity to the mesh network) with a remote probe at the pool would solve this issue. I’m willing to run CAT5 out to the pool (~70’)
I cannot find a thermostat which has a remote probe AND interfaces with an Insteon or Z-Wave mesh network.
Thanks
thermostat with remote sensor is easy:

Remote Temperature Sensors The TZ43 can accept up to 2 remote temperature sensors. The first sensor (RS1) will replace the internal temperature sensor of the TZ43. The second sensor (RS2) can either be an averaging sensor or an Outside sensor. Remote sensors compatible with the TZ43 need to have the following characteristics: 10K NTC Thermistor A-Curve, Type II, Type III curves Compatible RCS Remote sensors are: OS5 – Outdoor Sensor (A-Curve) RSxx – Indoor Surface Mount (Type II) RSxx – Indoor Flush Mount (Type II) Note: When using remote sensors it is important to properly configure the TZ43 for the particular sensor type. This menu option is located in Installer Settings – Remote Sensors. Failure to properly configure the sensor will result in in-accurate temperature readings.
not sure if you can find a probe that matches those specs for wet use though…
Check out Fortrezz.com, they have a Water/Freeze sensor avail now that shows ambient temp of the air, but they do have a remote water temp sensor that is Z-wave and it should be avail anytime now.
I know the Logitek (RSSceeneAutomation) Shade Controllers have a sensor input that could be use for temperature (they mention an April Air sp? sensor) and I think you can probably find a way to make a water temp sensor work.
You may want to check out what Intermatic is doing which may or may not be what you are looking for:
Good suggestions… But I’m still on the hunt for a device which can report the temperature of my pool water to Vera.
So far, the only solution I’ve found, that seems plausible, is also kind of overkill & expen$ive: Use a TZ43 RCS thermostat, utilizing the external temp sensor input, adding a waterproof temperature sensor in-line with my pool equipment, and sending the pool water temperature to Vera.
With the TZ43 installed, I plan to use a Z-wave controlled outlet (Intermatic In Wall Receptacle HA01C) to power a simple relay (w/ a 110v Coil) to close the heater circuit.
The goal is simple: Send water temperature readings to vera. Set an event which turns the HA01C outlet ON, electrifies the relay, closes the heater circuit and turns the pool heater on/off based on the set points in Vera.
I’ve already done something similar for POOL PUMP CONTROL: 110v coil Double Pole, 50Amp capacity, contactor and an HA10C receptacle (Total cost < $70) AND GARAGE DOOR OPEN/CLOSE CONTROL: 110v Coil relay and an HA02C Module controlled by a scene which electrifies the relay for 30sec and then powers off, to close the garage door open/close circuit, which is the same 2-wire circuit the manual garage door opener uses. (Total cost < $60).
My philosophical problem with using the TZ43 here is, the TZ43 is ~$250 and all I’ll be using it for is to tell Vera what my water temperature is over Z_Wave. The “Thermostat” features will go unused. The relay and associated sensor for the TZ43 are relatively inexpensive. I don’t particularly feel like paying ~$250 for a glorified Z-Wave enabled water temperature sensor.
Any other ideas?
Thanks!! ;D
How about a HM-TS001 - Z-Wave Temperature / Humidity Sensor
Its battery powered. Senses air temp but what if you rigged it in the skimmer to get a temp correlation.
Its a stretch but cheap and electric shock proof.
The HM-TS001 is for indoor use. I’ve seen the sensor, but I passed it over because it wasn’t for outdoor use. Thanks for the suggestion.
I’m willing to “hack” this sensor if I can take it apart and replace the temp sensor on-board with a remote sensor, but I don’t know if that will work. In other words… I’m willing to do some crazy DIY solution, but I’m not certain what direction to go in.
Thanks.
I don’t own one of these sensor so I don’t know what makes it tick. I think its around $50 bucks so if you could figure it out let me know.
Otherwise check out the Fortrezz 4 in 1 device. Its not out yet but may be promissing.

I saw this unit the other day, of course it isn’t available yet, but I don’t think it has a submersible Temp sensor on it.
I’m just surprised nobody has a temp sensor that has an external probe option.
Again, the TZ43 Thermostat from RCS seems to be the only “thing” albeit overkill and expensive…
Just frustrating to be looking for something that seems so simple and not being able to find it.
Call Fortrezz and ask for Carl, they DO have an external probe available when these come out. The biggest issue is making sure MCV and the vera team ADD SUPPORT FOR IT! As of right now, the Water/Temp sensor from fortrezz works, but its a pain in the arse to get the temp, its not shown on the GUI and you must dive into the advanced section to find it.
I want this temp to show in my smartphone GUI and Vera GUI. I use it to monitor the temp of my crawlspace.
Chat with Carl and then once you do so, shoot an email to MCV and post a thread asking about support for these devices/classes. I’ve asked MCV and Fortrezz to work together so we can have FULL support of these awesome devices from Fortrezz…
Thanks!!! I’ll give them a shout and see what’s up… Let you know how I make out.
Got this from Fortrezz:
I’m working with P3international to have their E9310 modified to speak z-wave.
I’f we agree you can have a product in 2 months.
I received the same message when I contacted them this afternoon. I guess I’ll be waiting 2 months for a device.
Have you been able to find a device that will give you the pools temperature? I was thinking of fixing the device on the underside of my skimmer cover and letting the probe hang inside the water. I was considering HM-TS001 - Z-Wave Temperature / Humidity Sensor and putting a probe that can be submersible. Any thoughts? A $50 dollar device and I am sure the probe will be around $20 kind of steep to just read temperature. Also you always run the chance that you spend all that money and it still doesn’t work.
I am not sure of the Qubino US status … but it’s available in Europe and has a nice product line … I believe many of the devices can have a temp probe added … So you can have a switch/sensor or a dimmer/sensor combo.

Also…
Fibaro makes a universal sensor that does temperature. Though this unit is not yet available in the U.S.
Fibaro also makes a door/window sensor that can have an external temperature probe. I think it is the same universal sensor, but with a case and magnetic reed switch.
why not consider the Fibaro flood sensor, it has a temperature sensor as well: http://www.vesternet.com/us/z-wave-fibaro-flood-sensor-us
