I was getting ready to purchase 2 more Veras, but I do not want to get the “Vera2”. I only want the unit with the dongle. Is there any way to still get the original Vera? I’m willing to purchase a used Vera if anyone is thinking of selling theirs. Thanks.
SmartHomeUSA still has the orginal box. I posted a link on how to get is for $269
Just in case, after ordering, tell them you want the original box.
Is the new one really that bad? I am looking to buy soon, but will pull the trigger now if the old one is better and it is still available.
Also, BCB shows up as 8% off for me, not 10%. With shipping, it comes out to $284.
You could buy your own Aeon Labs Z-Wave Dongle and Asus Router
and see if MCV will sell the MIOS or Vera software… (probably see if they’ll sell the software first, lol)
They may not be ready for this stage of product release, with a full installer.
As far as the new one being better than the other, I think ‘Guessed’ made a good point when he said that the new platform would rid MCV/Vera/Mios of the headaches related to being a router and a HA device. The new device is strictly a HA gateway and we already all have routers, so I don’t think the new platform is a bad thing (just a surprise).
Not sure that is the case anymore as shown by this post by SmartHomeUSA: (hint - they were caught off guard by the hardware change and are not happy)
We posted a follow-up to smarthome usa’s comments, and to the issues with the new hardware. There was simply misinformation and miscommunication. The specs on Vera 2 are the same. It still has wi-fi, still has a router, etc. Our #1 complain with Vera 1 was the removable dongle since users couldn’t use it to pair door locks and had to string extension cords across the house, and, unanimously dealers and customers said the way Schlage did it, with a battery powered gateway, was better. So that’s what we did with Vera 2. Also, the firmware in the ZWave chip in the external dongles cannot be automatically updated; with Vera 2 it is, so we won’t ever again have another dongle recall when the ZWave firmware changes. I think most people will agree the new hardware is a definite improvement. But, as we posted there, if anybody buys a Vera 2 and wants to exchange it for Vera 1, we will do that. Or you can order from us directly and just specify in the order comments you want a Vera 1 and we’ll offer it.
Those of you who are interested in Vera 1, there’s a supplier here in Canada who is selling Vera for $244.45 USD or $249.00 CDN. I spoke to him last week and he mentioned that he still has some of the old ones in stock. However I would call first to make sure before placing the order. Here is the link:

A second supplier has it on sale for $299.99 CDN (whom I purchase most of my supplies from) and his shipping time is excellent. Factor in the currency exchange and you’ll save even more. Again, call and ask him if it’s the first generation Vera and cost of having it shipped to the States.
take mine and I will buy Vera 2 with battery ![]()
Keeper, if you’re serious, send me a PM. Thx.
