I am building a new house and am designing my home automation system. I am ordering my controller next week and am trying to decide what pre-wiring needs to be done to accomplish all the things I want to. I just thought about using voice commands to control the devices. I am wondering if anybody has done that and what voice pickups you have used around the house. I am dictating this to my computer using Dragon NaturallySpeaking and was wondering if I could somehow interface that to the controller using Bluetooth pickups strategically located in the house which means I would have to put some USB wiring in the walls. This may be naïve but I thought I’d take a look.
It depends on what you want. I thought and planned this process through for months but in the end you will never have enough wire in the right places.

Seems to be the topic of the week. I only know one person who had voice to Vera function working, I’ll find the post for you.
JOD.

Thanks for the encouraging wiring reply; it’s about what I expect to happen, I’m just trying to avoid that “oh for Pete’s sake” reaction to something so obvious and stupid at something I forgot when it was too late. When I get a little more time I will have some more specific questions in this area.
Thanks for the link to the Dragon NaturallySpeaking subject. I don’t expect any probably using Dragon NaturallySpeaking in communicating with Vera via a web browser (of course there’s always Murphy’s Law). My question has to do with issuing commands while not at the computer. My first thought was of Dragon NaturallySpeaking and Bluetooth because I use it all the time. However, and thinking beyond 2 min., I realized that what I really need is some kind of a microphone pickup in rooms where I want to be able to issue commands.
At the moment I am standing 12 to 15 feet away from my computer testing to see how it will work. I can see it is being typed in on my monitor. Back in my seat now. I have an Andrea super beam array microphone model array 2S taped to the top of a desk lamp. In other words, I’m not wearing a headset.
However, this doesn’t seem like a viable solution i.e. to install these microphones all over the house and have Dragon NaturallySpeaking running all the time on a computer. A basic problem is all the extraneous noise that gets picked up. For example I him him him him him is what it just picked up as I roll around in my squeaky chair. Most of the time when it picks up some extraneous sound that doesn’t sound like speech Dragon NaturallySpeaking says “please say that again”. Oh well, this is just an idea I can pursue in my not so spare time. It seems like a solution built into Vera would be the best.
Anyway, thanks for the response.
Maybe someone will expand on the MS Kinect work thats already done and integrate with Vera?!
Cool application; I have it bookmarked, but I suppose I ought to buy a controller before getting too wrapped up in advanced applications.
Not related to voice input but I think this might be better: https://getmyo.com/
Can someone get the Bluetooth idea further so that we can get this thing in?
Activating things in my house using simple arm/hand gestures from anywhere would be awesome!!
We are in the FUTURE!
