VeraLite vs VeraEdge question for brand new user

Hello, I see lots of great discussion from experienced users related to upgrading (or why not to) from the Lite/Vera3 to the newer VeraEdge and all of its intricacies and pitfalls when one has lots of plugins and devices. These forums have tons of info - perhaps sometimes too much and in long multi-topic threads which can make it difficult to tease out simple answers. Sorry if this question has been asked and answered elsewhere:

As a new VeraLite user (UI7) with only a handful of devices (I have no problem reconfiguring a setup from scratch - it would take 15min), I’m wondering if it makes sense for me to return my VeraLite ($100) and get a VeraEdge ($150) instead. Is ZwavePlus and expanded memory and faster processor an upgrade for which I will notice a performance difference? I only have one LAN port on my router and would like to use it for something else, so the ability of the Vera controller to communicate with it via Wifi is appealing ? but I don’t want to open a can of worms if the VeraEdge is somehow more flaky than the VeraLite.

Should I pay the extra $50 now while I can still return the VeraLite?

Since you are already on UI7 … and ony have a few devices … the upgrade probably makes sense.
I am not sure if connecting Vera Edge via wifi is stable at this time … so you might still need your cable.

I agree with Richard if I was in your shoes I would return and upgrade. I actually bought the EDGE on Amazon for 133.00 a month ago. So if you watch for it the price might change.

Wifi client doesn’t work right now, but we expect that they should fix it in the next few weeks. Your vera lite don’t have it at all tho atleast with the edge its possible they will have it soon.

Z-wave plus is a bonus but there are not many devices now that use it. In the future that will be more useful.

Faster processor and more ram probley you won’t see any difference. The thing is you can add more plugins and devices without reboots and issues. So again this probley won’t help you today but in the future.

Your already on ui7 so the software will look the same and no change there. Lite is able to run on older software that is more stable and more plugins are working, but everything is very slowing being upgraded to work with ui7. There is already certain things like z-smoke detectors that only work on new ui7.

Altho there are bugs with the new EDGE they are all software related that we can see and those will be fixed sometime. I would watch the news from the current CES event going on in LAS Vegas on the new devices VERA is releasing and upgrade to the Edge.

I am also a brand new user to Vera and bought a Veralite last week and was able to pair all my z-wave devices to it. Now that I’ve gotten a good feel for Vera, I was thinking about returning and upgrading to the Edge.

If I do so, and backup my Veralite, will I be able to restore everything to the Edge without having to re-pair all of my devices? The Veralite is on UI7, just like the Edge would be.

Thanks in advance,
-Eddie

I think (but could be wrong) that they would like you to set the two side by side and port everything over vs. running a backup and trying to restore. Might be due to z-wave plus chip.

Also I’m assuming you have very few devices. Not sure if you walked around to each device to pair like many new users get sucked into, but if it was me and I only had 10 or less devices and not a lot of plugins I would just start fresh to make sure you don’t bring any errors or bug with you.

Thank you for this. How would I port everything side by side? Unfortunately, I have 50 switches and scene controllers. It didn’t take me too long, but I’d rather not have to redo everything if I don’t have to!! LOL.

Thanks again,

A phone call to VERA if your in the states would be my first option. They will be on the phone with you for around 30 min. I don’t have the instructions but I’m sure a search on here might turn up more info I can provide you with.
