VeraLite setup broken (Zwave failed to start) --> Moving to edge...?

Having had long mailthreads with MCV over mail…

I have had a very succesfull setup for about 2 years with a Vera Lite. All of a sudden my setup stopped working due to a “Zwave: failed to start” error. Nothing works anymore.

According to MCV support this is due to a faulty device in my network and the cant detect or see what it is. They advised me to start all over by resetting the zwave network and include all again.

Easy said…

But then. How do I exclude all devices from the old zwave network which is not running anymore due to the “zwave: failed to start” error. I can’t use the controller to exclude anymore. I have to go to every device and find out how to factory reset it. But that does not seem to work for lot of devices.

e.g. a duwi dimmer, blind controller, light switch all NEED a controller to exclude. I have tried with a new controller but that has a different zwave house id and nothing happens.

Anyone has a golden tip to exclude devices from a zwave network which is not there anymore?

I have bought a Vera edge to completely start over… My idea was to exclude all devices from the veralite setup (which is broken) and include one-by-one to vera edge…

Any Z-Wave controller can exclude any device.

You say you have purchased a Vera Edge; you can use the Vera Edge to exclude your devices.

So this just happened to me. I can’t go and just exclude everything and start over.
The only thing that changed was that I went around and replaced batteries in my Aeon door sensors that had been low battery.

Is there no way to figure out the faulty device? And even if I might have an idea as to which one, how to go about working on it?
So this just happened to me.
What just happened to you? You changed batteries in sensors and now Vera reports “zwave: failed to start”? I find that rather unlikely. Though I could be wrong, I find the idea that any failed Z-Wave device, except Vera’s own Z-Wave dongle, could cause Vera’s Z-Wave to fail to start.

What I would suggest is that, if you cannot do any self troubleshooting, like looking at the log file or backing up and resetting and restoring Vera, that you should contact Vera technical support.

“zwave: failed to start” does not sound like a sensor failure or anything outside of Vera.

it actually can be… i had ONE duwi device causing this to vera. and the formal answer from vera was to “start all over”. there was no way to find the faulty device.

So… I wanted to followup on this. I decided that since I only changed batteries in 10 devices, I’d go take a look at them. One of the door sensors had its red light solid on. I popped out the batteries and re-seated it. Rebooted Vera. And now it works.

Something I have decided to start doing is keeping a journal of all the changes I make… that way, I never say ‘I didn’t change anything’, and instead can be methodical in terms of troubleshooting.

I’m glad you got it resolved.

Did you try rebooting Vera before finding the device?

About a dozen times.
