VeraEdge & Elk M1. Add Elk wireless module or Elk z-wave module?

I have VeraEdge and Elk M1 panel with Ethernet module. I want to add wireless window and motion sensors to the security zone. Should I

(1) Add Elk wireless module to the M1 panel and add wireless sensors,
(2) Add Elk z-wave module to the M1 panel and add z-wave sensors, or
(3) Just add z-wave sensors and then somehow tie the sensors into the M1 system

What is the best way to do this? Please be gentle as I am a newbie.

As a DSC user, the answer for me would be simple - make sure you keep the alarm system such that it functions stand-alone. And prefer DSC wireless to z-wave. So I added the DSC wireless module and use DSC wireless for ALL security, and many non-security applications (interior door sensors, garage door sensor).
