Vera2 new user. First confused, then challenged and finally happy

Well, well, well.

I was prepared! I knew upfront that Vera installation and setup are not for the average person and are rather geek oriented but my experience with Vera2 setup beats all expectations!

First, I connected Vera to the network switch and opened www.findvera.com

Of course, “Vera was not found on your home network”. OK, let’s try Wi-Fi connection.
Bingo, Vera2_23456 (ID changed) showed up in the list of available access points. But what, it requires a network key. Good, I have secure Wi-Fi connection but how do I know that damn network key?

All right, all right, I can connect my computer to the Ethr2 and Vera will act as DHCP server, all I need is just type http://192.168.2.81 in the browser. Doesn’t work either. OK, let’s reset Vera and reboot.

Wow, I’m there! Let’s configure Wi-Fi network key, set “connected to the switch” option and save configuration. Boom, connection lost.

Powered Vera and rebooted computer several times, no avail. Well, there is a small hole for the Reset button. Nothing happened after the first reset but the second one worked, I’ve got the setup screen again. Now let’s try to configure Wi-Fi and other network stuff starting form the square one. Trying to save it … connection lost.

Patience, dude, patience. Let’s try again but instead of DHCP assign static address. Bingo, Wi-Fi works and my poor Vera2 finally was found.

Now the happy part.

I added my two zWave devices (Trane Thermostat and outdoor lamp switch) without any problem.

GUI definitely could be better, but my 87-old mother-in-law has no problem setting temperature on the Thermostat and turning the lamp on and off.

Great system, kudos to developers!
