Vera2 and Schlage Link

I got a Schlage Link wireless entry FE599GR, and the guy on gowireless suggested I get the Vera2 to avoid the monthly charge. (Vacation Rental) I also want to pair a thermostat, lights, etc. But it seems that the only real functionality I have is to set new PINs. I can’t edit, I can’t delete, I can’t even see a list of the PINs I have. There seems to be nothing else I can do. Is that true, or am I missing something?

Also, it seems that the iPhone app I got - $30 - can pretty much only lock and unlock the door. Nothing else. Am I missing something?

I’m using a Kiwkset lock with my Vera and I can manage the PINs (create&name it, see, delete), lock, unlock, all that from home as well as from anywhere in the world with internet access. It should be the same with Schlage.
Maybe I just don’t understand your question ?

You can set and delete new lock PIN codes on Vera. You can give these names. Vera can remember the actual PIN codes for you (i.e. the actual codes are not retrievable from the lock). You can lock and unlock. There’s not much else a lock has to offer.

But you can use your lock in scenes, or have Vera schedule PIN codes for your lock, or have Vera sent you a notification when someone enters a PIN. The scenes you can kick off from Vera or the iPhone app. Typical example is probably a Departure scene that locks your doors, shuts off the lights and kicks down the thermostat.

I’m planning to get Vera for my apartment in Europe. I am aware that the z-wave frequency in Europe is different from the US. Will the Schlage link work in Europe with Vera?

They both would need to operate at the same frequency; i.e. U.S. frequency, which you probably can’t legally operate over in Europe (depending on country?). And the lock would have to physically fit.

The physical fit of a lock is no problem in my opinion.

However, being in Europe, a few things to take notice off:

  1. Europe is on 220V 50Hz main. Wall plugs can vary from country to country and not fit the standard US plug format

  2. Vera supports both European and US frequencys out of the box. I think its decided upon installation in what frequency Vera operates.
NOTE, maybe certain switches and other Z-wave devices support this option too? Anyone feel like chipping in?

  3. Even if the US frequency use would be legal in a certain country, please note its illegal to sell these controllers here. Shops in Europe will always provide equipment that use the European frequencies and the plugstandard provided for that country.

This issue is what kept me from ordering Z-wave equipment from webshops in the US.
Which is a shame because im looking for a thermostat to control my central heating (NO HVAC, NO 24V, battery operated, 2 wire) and those are HARD to find in the states, not to mention Europe!

–edit–
Frequency band: The Z-Wave Radio uses the 900 MHz ISM band: 908.42 MHz (United States); 868.42 MHz (Europe); 919.82 MHz (Hong Kong); 921.42 MHz (Australia/New Zealand).

info from Z-Wave - Wikipedia

It has been posted that there is no way to run dual USB dongles (to have dual frequencies) with Vera, but is it possible to run two Veras (one US and one EU frequency) and bridge them. Could be an expensive way to run locks or other US devices overseas.

I suspect that this has been covered elsewhere, but I can’t seem to find reference to it, so I am adding my question to this thread. I hope it’s ok!

I have the Schlage lever lock on my Vera2. It works great for the most part.

The one thing I have tried to do but cannot get to work correctly is to send a text message to me when an incorrect PIN is entered. I am using 1.1.1245 and 2.78.

I do get text messages correctly from other non-Schlage events (such as a light being turned on), but don’t get one when a bad PIN is entered.

Is this a known bug? Is there any way to get it to work?

Did you try 4 bad PINs in a row, where the lock goes into lockdown for 30 seconds? Only at that time does the lock send the bad-PIN event.

No! I didn’t know that it had to get 4 bads in a row. That makes some sense though, since a single bad PIN would generate a lot of false positives. I’ll have to try it tonight.

Thanks!
