Vera I as router only

I just want to do this for fun… and excuse my lack of knowledge on these topics…

After upgrading to Vera II, and using my Z-Stick elsewhere, I would like to play around with Vera I and convert it to a router only. Is it possible to load one of those open source router programs that are available and just have a new router on hand?

If this is possible, can anyone direct me to somewhere to get the basic procedure and firmware?

Thanks, I’ll report back if it works and there is anything interesting to say… Thanks guys,
Anthony

If you’re dabbling you might like to try this:
DD-WRT » Router Database

and use “asus wl-500” as the search criteria. This has all the Linux underpinnings, but comes with much greater Router functionality built in, and a very good Admin UI and fairly good documentation.

If you want more “techie” then try this:
http://openwrt.org/

This is what Vera is based upon, so the Admin UI is a lot more primative for the router features. If you’re going this route, you might as well leave the “MiOS” features in there, since you already have all the other bits that OpenWRT would bring.

There are a bunch of others, and I’m sure people will chime in as well…

Well it is a router. It’s a router running OpenWRT with Vera’s software running on it too. Don’t take that as a criticism of the product. It’s actually a very good idea. The OpenWRT release is Kamikaze 7.09 and that’s using a Linux 2.4 Kernel.
