I’ve noticed that I’m getting this problem with Luup taking longer and the zwave light being out. The instructions on this thread solve the problem but does anyone know why this is happening like once a day or so? I’m on Vera Edge (european) firmware version 1.7.1598 (which is the very latest as of today).
Hello!
I’ve also had the same problem. After some inloggings it came - “Luup take longer error”. Then I tried an Another PC and the same happened again, a third PC and same again.
I resetted the Vera, pushed in the button for 30 sek with power on and the Vera vas resetted but the same - “Luup take longer error”.
Then it came up, a second thought - the same wiewer on all PC’s - MS Edge. So I tried to log in by FireFox and all problems dissapeared, now all works fine.
I just found out that IE or EDGE gives this error when trying to access Vera Edge remotely but not locally from inside your network. Firefox works with no issues at all.
I work with Vera 3 since almost 2,5 years. In the meantime I have lots of devices and plugins. Till 2 months ago everything worked almost flawlessly. But then Vera stopped working now and: the zwave light on the controller was out, I could not reach Vera UI5 (did not upgrade to UI7 because of too many issues reported on this forum) via my PC anymore and also SSH via WinSCP is not possible. What works is shutting of the power of the Vera and connecting it back again. In the beginning this happened only once per 2 weeks but recently it’s almost every day… The strange thing is that since this problem occured for the 1st time I did not make any changes to Vera (no new devices, no new plugins, no new LUA coding).
Question: can someone in this forum help me to find the cause of this problem and what can I do to prevent it happening again. So far I did not find a solution. I will also make a support call, but Vera support is not that quick to respond.
Using ssh to investigate the log’s, I found that the LuaUPNP,log file shows the LuaUPNP Terminated with Exit Code: 245 message.
The good news - and hopefully it can help one or two others on this forum - is that I think that I have found a cure!
I powered up the Edge as normal (no reset button) and connected via ssh. Looking in /etc/cmh I saw a number of user_data.json.lzo files with timestamps from before and directly after the problems started.
When I replaced the current user_data.json.lzo file with the oldest backup of this file and restarted cmh everything worked again.
The commands that I used once I logged in the the Edge by ssh were:
cd /etc/cmh
Stop_cmh.sh
mv user_data.json.lzo user_data.json.lzo.bak
mv user_data.json.lzo.5 user_data.json.lzo
Start_cmh.sh
I cannot guarantee that this will work for everyone, but if it helps even one of you then it is worth me posting.
Yesterday my Vera3 again stopped working (zwave light out). After power cycle it was up and running again and today I used WINscp/SSH to log into the unit. I checked the LuaUPNP.log file but it showed a huge amount of lines but all of today, so I did not find any error message of yesterday. I also checked the user_data.json.lzo files. I saw several of them but also only with date of today so created after the error. I see also a user_data.json.lzo.bak but this one is created on february 2014 and is much bigger.
So I still did not find any cause nor solution for my problem. I opened a support ticket to Vera. I hope they help me soon. Getting more and more frustrated: don’t dare to upgrade to Vera Plus and UI7 due to all the problems and bugs.
Whoa! The exact same thing happened to me also last night on my Edge. Zwave light out, luup wont load and then, of course, the dreaded green wheel of death. Replaced my Lite with Edge two weeks ago and running fine… until this. It acts as if it has been bricked in some fashion. Was a firmware update pushed out when we were not looking and has now hosed it up.

Well… 5 months further and NEVER HAD ANY REACTION FROM VERA SUPPORT…
I still had several times this problem again. My zwave network is suddenly completely unresponsive. The zwave led on my Vera3 is out. Only a power cycle will solve the problem. It’s also unpredictable. Sometimes for several weeks it works fine and then suddenly more freqent problems. In June I installed the System Monitor plugin and logged measurements via Datamine2. Load1 Load5 and Load1 are mostly between 0,2 and 0,5. Only sometimes (mostly around 2.00h) short peak above 1. But always when the problem occurs the load values are low (<0,5). Who can help me or point me in the right direction? I always was very satisfied with Vera3 on UI5 and I have a lot of devices and plugins in the meantime but now the moment has come to seriously consider another solution. Vera3 on UI5 is unreliable and Veraplus on UI7 still shows a lot of problems.
Do you use a USB memory stick and have you enable USB logging ?
This puts the logs on the USB stick instead of slowly using up memory.
You may be running out of memory …
I don’t use a USB stick for logging. Both USB ports are in use (RFXcom and smart meter cable).
Eventwatcher says: Memory Avail (kB)70984 Memory Free (kB)36752
Seems like enough memory free ?
Thanks for your post, it was very useful. When I received my Vera Edge I tried to migrate from the Vera 3 using directions I found in the forum. After following those directions, and after restarting the Vera Edge, I ended up with the LUUP taking too long error, and no Z-Wave light. I sent a note to support, and they did respond. However it was the holidays and I wasn’t checking emails. When I got around to it, I enabled Tech Support on the Vera Edge and reported that information back. When I didn’t hear back I started searching this forum again and found your post.
I used WinSCP to login to the Vera Edge and looked for the files as you instructed. Since all my files were bad, because of the initial migration attempt, I found a clean file in the /etc/cmh/orig directory. I Renamed the current file as you instructed and duplicated the file in the /etc/cmh/orig directory to the /etc/cmh directory. As soon as I did that, without doing anything else, the Z-Wave light came on and the unit connected via the web gui.
I was able to reset to default on the backup page, and now it’s totally back to try again.

Many thanks John.
I had the same issue on Vera3. All my backup files in /etc/cmh were also corrupt. Copying the file from /etc/cmh/orig to /etc/cmh and then restoring from backup got me back working.

I had same problem with my Vera 3.
Fought to get it setup in 2014.
Got it working.
Worked till 2017.
Z Wave light out and browser stuck at firmware update page. No other data displayed in browser.
Tried all buttons and power and internet reset. No luck.
I found this thread.
Used Win SCP to communicate with the Vera 3.
Used the ip address for the unit.
User: root Password:
Went to /etc/cmh
renamed user_data.json.lzo to user_data.json.lzo.bak
renamed user_data.json.lzo.tmo to user_data.json.lzo
I was then able to get data up in browser, but Vera unit was fighting every command.
Reluctantly I did a firmware update. It did take several minutes including backup.
Then I had to reload all my Z Wave devices.
Now it is all working again.
Thank you to everyone who posted in this thread. It saved me from hurling my Vera 3 into the recycle pile.
