Over the years, as devices act up, and we remove and re-add, the device number grows, and those phantom device numbers cause Vera to increment to higher numbers, for the same device previously removed.
To keep it clean on my new EDGE, with a nice fresh install, I do not want to do a backup and restore, as that will simply restore the configuration, along with the high device number count.
A quick poll - Is there no tool , or process, where Vera can purge, and automatically renumber the devices starting at 1? I am ok with deleting all PLEGS, scenes, etc.
A clean install is worth a complete rebuild, but if I can avoid removing and readding each device, that would be a bonus.
Sure, so first, I want to have a device count that matches my physical number of devices + my virtual number of devices, as closely as possible.
On Vera lite, the limit I seem to notice people talking of that one might not want to exceed is ~ 70 devices. Having DID in the 500’s does not help me track, at all, my limitations on vera lite. I doubt I will hit my limit on Edge or Plus, but nice to clearly see how close I am at a given point in time.
I have also noticed ghost triggers in my vera lite that do not appear in the triggers list, but do appear in other drop down lists. I like things to make sense, if I remove a trigger, for example, I expect that deleted trigger NEVER to appear again in a property or drop down.
I have just removed 90 % of my devices, and will be doing this with a clean slate. I have learned the importance of 1) when you have everything just the way you like it, back up as a baseline, then backup each time a device(s) are successfully installed. If an install fails, I can go back to baseline, and avoid the incrementing of failed, non existing devices.
I read about being able to remove a device from ANY vera unit, ok, fine.
I also read one thread telling a user to never turn on the original vera again on the network, or at that house.
If I install all devices on EDGE, and factory reset the vera lite, does that mean I cannot ever use the original , old vera lite, as a sandbox for testing, as the switches/ devices may remember the old vera lite ?
I think the clue here is in the word “original”, meaning “in the condition that it was when you disconnected it from your network.” A factory reset should erase everything, and yes, certainly, you can use the original as a sandbox. I have done the same myself, several times, in the process of acquiring four Veras.
I believe that the context of that thread is the case where you are restoring a backup from a specific Vera unit to a replacement unit. When you restore the backup, it basically clones the old unit onto the new unit… If you then use the old unit, you have two Vera units with the same Z-Wave ID and Vera ID, trying to control the same Z-Wave devices and connected to the same Vera account… Bad things can happen in this case…
With your plan to manually remove the Z-Wave devices from the Veralite and manually add them to the Vera Edge, you are not cloning the original unit… Each device has a unique Vera ID and a unique Z-Wave ID… You will be able to leave the Veralite connected to your network and operating without any issues.
A thought on UPNP, my plan is to continue to use UPNP with the Edge seeing all devices on the remote vera units.
I will have the physical devices in the left side of the house served by Vera-Garage, all virtual switches and devices served by Vera-Virtual, and all cameras, other apps, and right side of house physical devices served by Vera-Main(Edge)
Since I have already wiped my other Vera lite’s, I cannot recall how the device ID’s appeared on the Main vera, that were actually devices on a remote vera.
Did the main vera actually add the devices housed on the remote vera as a local DID (Device ID) on the main vera, I have to say it must, which leads me to wonder how I can can ever really keep my DID count on the main vera (edge) truly clean ???
IE - if the remote vera’s were suddenly taken away, what would be the state of those DID’s , would the Vera - Main (edge) forget those, and if I add a new physical device to Vera-Main, will it increment by 1 ?
Example:
Vera - Right - DID 1-5
Vera - Virtual - DID 1-5
Vera - Main - DID 1-5
Vera- Main can see all devices via UPNP
1-5 physical
6-10 virtual
11-15 right
Vera Main would add my next physical device as 16, or 6?
Curious more than anything…
