One of the weakest links with Vera is the wiki documentation. For example: I was trying to put in a schlage deadbolt. Under [b]“Method 2 - Vera is located CLOSE to the lock you’re adding” the wiki document says:
Click ‘Go’ and immediately walk to the lock. (You must complete Steps 6-8 within 30 seconds.)
On the lock’s keypad, enter the 6-digit programming code, then press the [Schlage] button.
After the [Schlage] button stops blinking amber, press ‘0’. The [Schlage] button should light up green, indicating that pairing with Vera was successful."
I spent at least an hour trying to make this work. Maybe I am just stupid. I went back to the Schlage documentation and found that I had to wait after entering the program code for the Schlage button to flash 3 times and the lock to tone 3 times before pressing schlage and 0.
I assume that I am not the only one to make this mistake. Because of the poorly written wiki documents and just plain errors in wiki documentation,I have spent countless frustrating hours trying to make Vera work as it should.
It is not my intention to criticize anyone, but to make Vera more successful and to help some poor user avoid many of the mistakes I made.
You are not alone. I installed mine in August. I had difficulty with the directions, but muddled through the process without really understanding it. It took me about an hour and the lock finally appeared on Vera. I was not sure what I did, but all was great in the world when it happened.
I have not experienced any issues since then and the lock works extremely well with Vera. Hang in there, it is well worth the effort.
On a positive note once the lock was in for me it has worked flawlessly ever since (Im on '979). I noticed right away that the sequence was wrong however still after realizing I had to wait it took me at least an hour to get things going. I think the Schlage setup is just a bit more complicated than your average zwave device setup, and maybe it should be… I don’t want an insecure “lock” that anyone can take over easily. If someone was going to sneak into my lock, I would hope it would take them an hour too
It’s hard to document everything as accurate as possible. That’s why some users can modify the wiki pages, to make them better. I’ve modified the wiki page with the Schlage Setup instructions. Thanks!
I believe the Wiki needs to be updated to reflect the “wait for the three flashes and beeps” part… Just moved a lock from Schlage LiNK to my new Vera today and had to go back to the Schlage site to confirm the steps.
Here is another example of incomplete instructions or if its there I just missed it. When I finished following the instructions to set up the Schlage bolt lock, the green cog wheel did not appear, nor did the “slots” to enter names and pins. The lock was in my devices, but I couldn’t operate it with Vera. I wasted a number of hours trying to make it work until I finally stumbled into the Other z-wave Options screen and with a little bit of trepidation I checked the box “By default, Vera should automatically configure devices.” That did it. Should I keep that box checked for every device. If not, why not?
