Vera Alerts

Great! That’s even better than I was hoping for. Thanks.

Um, looks like I spoke too soon. I have my Registration id fro the Android app entered into my Vera device. Now I think the next step, according to the documentation is to create a scene so that I can get alerts from my Fortrezz WWA-02 water detector. But when I go to “Create scene” in UI5, my “water, freeze alarm” device is grayed out with a red circle and a line through it.

So how do I associate the water sensor with Vera Alerts?

You can do this two ways:

  1. As a scene … You must use the Triggers tab … not the devices tab.
You are triggering the scene as a result of some other device (your Fortrezz WWA-02 water detector).
Then in the ADVANCED tab for the Scene you can use the SendEvent Action for Vera Alerts.
or you can call it from LUA code … there are examples on the forum.

  2. If you just want to send an event you can add a NOTIFICATION to the Fortrezz WWA-02 water detector device. Then in Vera Alerts select the Notification Configuration tab.

ALL of this information is on the Web site for the Vera Alerts Plugin!

“2) If you just want to send an event you can add a NOTIFICATION to the Fortrezz WWA-02 water detector device. Then in Vera Alerts select the Notification Configuration tab.”

OK, OK, please bear with me - I did read the documentation and I’m afraid I’m just not getting it.

I tried method 1 first but I don’t see any “SendEvent Action” in the Advanced tab for the Scene listed under Triggers (whatever they are). So I moved on to no. 2.

Now in the Fortrezz device I’m on the Notifications tab. I assume I have to put something in the “Notification name” tab? But what goes in there? My MIOS user name, my Vera Alerts Registration number, or the current phase of the moon??? Or is “Notification name” just some string that you use to refer a notification to? I"m still not seeing how to link the Android app to the UI5 Vera Alerts dingus.

I already have my Android Registration number set up in the Vera Alerts Notification Configuration.

I guess what I really need is a check box that I can click on that says “Send me an alarm when this $%*&^# thing gets wet”. I completely realize how clueless this all sounds but my God, there are 5,000,000 different options and combinations in UI5 all with vaguely similar but meaningless names. I feel like I’m playing Adventure again and I’m stuck in the maze of twisty passages, all alike. Foo.

Option 1 detailed:

[ol][li]Automation Tab[/li]
[li]New Scene[/li]
[li]Triggers Tab[/li]
[li]Add Trigger[/li]
[li]Specify the Water Device and the appropriate trigger
I do not have one … so I do not know the details for this.[/li]
[li]Advance Tab[/li]
[li]Pick a device … Select the Vera Alerts Device … Add[/li]
[li]Select the Send Alert action[/li]
[li]Specify the Message, Leave the Recipients Blank, if you want to use the default recipients.[/li][/ol]

[hr]
Option 2 Detailed:

[ol][li]Click the wrench on your Wate Sensor Device[/li]
[li]Click on Notifications[/li]
[li]Please Select … Select a tripped sensor[/li]
[li]Specify it’s name, does not have to be unique, but it helps. Specify that it’s tripped. And Add.[/li]
[li]Specify the Vera User (With a click box) to received the notification.[/li]
[li]Save[/li]
[li]Click the wrench on Vera Alerts[/li]
[li]If you recently installed Vera Alerts. Open Settings tab. Check/Uncheck/Check the Process Notifications[/li]
[li]Click the Notification Configuration Tab[/li]
[li]You can set the Vera Alerts ID for the user here … or leave it blank to use the defaults.[/li]
[li]You can see/override the message for your alert.[/li]
[li]Save[/li][/ol]

Hang in there … there is a maze … but it’s not that complicated … you just have to wander around a little at first.

Thanks much - that was clear enough for me to follow. I did Method 2 but I’m still not getting alerts on my Android (Galaxy Note 2 if that matters). I am however now getting emails when the sensor trips (actually I get three identical emails every time the sensor trips) - not sure how that’s happening since I haven’t put my email in the VeraAlerts device. ???

(I also tried switching the phone from wi-fi to 4G but that didn’t help).

Update: while testing, the last email I got said “This will be your last notification because you have hit your quota limit”. Um, what quota limit?

You need to turn off Email at the MCV site (See the Account Page).
Or you can create a second user at the MCV site that has email disabled.
Then on your notifications you can decide to send to Email (Via MCV) or VeraAlerts by picking the appropriate user in the notifications.

Oh I get it now - thanks. Actually, I think I’ll leave email turned on since I’m not getting anything through Vera Alerts. What’s odd is that I have Vera Alert (singular) set up on my Vera 2 at my other house and it works fine over there.

I tried Method 1 today and that doesn’t work either. Not sure why it wouldn’t work.

MIchelle, can you successfully send a test from the Vera Alerts module / Wrench Icon / Send Alert - to your mobile device(s) you have the Vera Alerts app installed on?
Heres How;

  1. Go to the Vera Alerts module / Wrench Icon / Send Alert.
  2. Leave the Ricipient(s) text box empty and type some text in the Message text box and click send, it should send a alert to the mobile device(s) listed in the Settings tab under the Default Recipients.

If you get the alert you are set up on that end.
If not, you need to set it up again to get the alert.

No - I tried the test and I get nothing on the Galaxy Note 2. I know the water sensor is working because I do get emails when it’s triggered - I’m just not getting the VeraAlerts notifications. I’ve carefully checked my installation and I’m pretty sure I did it right. I don’t really know what else to do at this point.

Make sure you have the Same Vera Alerts ID in both:

  1. Vera Alerts Plugin
  2. Vera Alerts Android App

If you still have a problem send me an PM with your Vera Alerts ID … And I will check the log files to see if Vera Is sending it OK.

Just installed Alerts, thinking it might be nicer than getting bunch of separate emails/texts (which it is, thank you).

I get a ton of “Vera Startup”, 5-10 times a day - I do not get them with Vera’s internal notifications: email/text?

I have…
One Recipient (your Android app)
“Process Notifications” checked
“Internal Alerts” not checked
… nothing else set

What am I doing wrong with your app?
… and any idea why I get so many?

thx

Sorry, you need to toggle the Internal Alerts a couple times. Then save.
There is a bug reporting the Internal Alerts when first installed … I keep forgetting to fix it.

Vera restarting 4 to 5 times a days is not normal … unless you are installing devices or plugins and/or are developing a plugin. I only get 1 per day … that around 4:30 in the morning as part of the nightly heal.

I’m pretty new to Vera and just ran across this app. Is it a replacement to the built-in Vera notifications? If so, would it be possible to port the client to Windows Phone?

There has been a request to do a Windows Phone client …
This will be a while before I get to this … If there is already I notification service available on Windows Mobile … I can modify the Vera Alters Plugin to forwards … just need some details about the notification service.

Great news! I believe that are push notifications built in. This may help: Push notifications for Windows Phone 8 | Microsoft Learn

Verry good news, when you get around to this I will do what I can to help with testing and feedback.

I just installed VeraAlerts and setup a few things and I have to say WOW its great! ;D

I am yet to figure out how to send email notifications again, I turned off the Micasaverde emailing in the account settings, think I now need to create a new second MIOS account for use with VeraAlerts email notifications.

I have however managed to setup VeraAlerts with two of our Android tablets and have installed the Amy voice app. Now when I run our leaving house and welcome home scenes it speaks out! One question how can I not have it speaking out at night time when we are asleep? Other than lowering the volume or turning off the tablet altogether?

VeraAlerts is instantly addictive and I am now looking for a cheap solution to have an Android device permanently connected to some speakers in my downstairs areas. My first thought was a cheap second hand Android phone but not sure what version of Android I would need or does it work with all older versions? I then thought about running a Virtual Machine on my Windows Home Server running a virtual Android seems its possible here. But my server sleeps when no clients are active on the LAN.

I then saw these USB Android devices you plug in to the back of the TV, which look interesting for running VeraAlerts app on but the TV probably has to be turned on for the Android USB stick to work as they plug in to an HDMI port.

Also not sure I would want a large AVR or stereo amp turned on all the time to drive the speakers, although I do have amps in every room in the house, but probably looking for a very small low powered amp dedicated to this task. Or maybe I could Z-wave an existing amp with a Z-wave plug to turn one on and then off after speech?

Just wondering what others have done for a permanently connected Android device in the house? Looking for ideas!

Thanks.

Edit: Or maybe something like this Mini Android PC here and a cheap amp like this one runs at 12v 2amps!

It’s on my list to add a quite time schedule to the Android app.

Hi

Excellent that would be very useful indeed!
