I’m having trouble as well.
I heard Google C2DM is deprecated, maybe it went away?
I was doing a new setup, but I’ve double checked my settings and think I’m having some other problem.
I can however register so that might mean C2DM is around.
In general I’m just confused. Hopefully someone can find out more. I was looking forward to awesome push notifications.
My understanding is that the vera alert is dependent on another server for the registration and sending of messages that relay to the Google servers for c2dm. New registrations to use the service in your app is disabled, however it is still active for existing accounts like vera alert. There might be an issue on the other server that relays to the Google c2dm service.
Looks like Google revoked the authorization key yesterday.
The gateway is there … it just throws an un-authorized exception.
GCM is the replacement for C2DM … I have already upgraded the application to GCM.
All of the new features are not quite ready … But I will release it in it’s current state just to get past this. The existing features are working fine on GCM.
When you update the android application you will need to unregister/register again. It will then use the GCM gateway.
I will release the Android App this evening … I am just returning from holiday travel.
Hopefully you will be able to download the new App tomorrow.
Very strange they revoked the key. Did a search online and not seeing other services being effected. Would be nice to know why they revoked it. Is the new gcm service still running on Richard Green’s host or a new host? I recently started working with gcm as well. The server has some nice potential.
The new server is running on a new app host … I have the original app host (C2DM) forwarding to the new app host (GCM) as well as sending the message out to the C2DM gatway. Been doing so for over a week. This will go away when I upgrade the Vera Plugin to call the new app host directly.
I am still get my messages … forwarded from the old app host … that’s why I did not notice.
But I looked at the log files for the old app host and it’s complaining about an authorization key when it attempts to send the message through the C2DM network. The old service was about to die anyway … It is on the free service quota and Richard G. has stored every message in the database … he was near to busting his quota. (1GB of database space). As of early Jan 1, VeraAlert was just shy of 500,000 alerts.
We currently average around 3500 alerts/day.
I do not store the messages in the new App Host, I only store a cnt of messages per month. So I save 12 Records/VeraAlertsID/Year. I do not store ANY personal info. I will allow users to check the total statistics and the statistics for their VeraAlertsID.
Looking through the logs in more detail, It looked like they shut it off at exactly 4:00 AM CST Jan 2, 2013
I just released the Android Application. It has the following features:
[ul][li]Convert from Google’s C2DM to GCM. Needed to get alerts![/li]
[li]Fixed bug with Message Delay set to 0[/li]
[li]Fixed Sorting bug when adding new alerts while notifications are already visible.[/li]
[li]Fixed Queuing order when multiple alerts arrive virtually simultaneously.[/li]
[li]Stay in delete mode when deleting entries.[/li]
[li]When any Vera Alerts Window is displayed, the volume control sets the TTS volume AND alert volume.[/li]
[li]While on phone, TTS messages are delayed, alert tone is still played.[/li][/ul]
I have a few more features that will be released soon … But Google forced me to release the conversion from C2DM to GCM … so that people can receive their alerts.
No changes are needed to the Vera Plugin (UI4 or UI5) for the conversion to GCM. Although I have some for UI5 folks in the pipeline ![]()
I updated the Android app, un-register/re-register and it all just started working.
I appreciate you fixing things so quickly!
Snap, updated app and everything seems perfect so far.
Wow! thanks for the quick fix.
There will be an approximate 1/2 second delay until I release a new Vera Plugin.
This is caused by an extra hop needed during the transition from C2DM to GCM.
Should be out next week.
Thank you!
Thank you ![]()
Thanks, working again
Working here in the Netherlands as well ![]()
Thanks Richard for your efforts!
