If I turn off Wifi on the Vera 3, what will happen if I unplug the unit from the LAN? I remember an auto switch setting, would the Vera automatically turn on and switch over to Wifi?
Basically, I’m wondering if the Wifi function is in regards to broadcasting a Wifi signal (which I don’t want) or if it includes the Vera switching over to Wifi when I unplug it to include new devices (which I do want). If I turn it off I know I’ll be pulling my hair out trying to figure out why I can’t include new devices.
Vera’s Wifi is not for connecting her to an existing network. The WAN port is for that. The WiFi is basically like any other WiFi router. For connecting wireless devices to which are then routed via the WAN port to the wired infrastructure.
Not to say you could not use vera’s WiFi as a wireless AP to connect her to your wireless network as a backup solution. But that would mean some major hacking of the OpenWRT OS Vera’s Zwave stack runs on.
But when I put the Vera on battery power I can carry the unit around to include switches and see updates on the computer. Plus, it is advertised the Vera can act as an access point to the existing wifi by plugging devices into it.
Wifi on or off has no effect on including (or excluding) Zwave devices. Zwave devices communicate to Vera using the Zwave radio, not Wifi.
As to what happens when you disconnect from your router (i.e from your LAN), it should mean that nothing happens other than Vera will no longer be accessable from another computer. (Obviously you will not see the results of inclusion until you reconnect to your router/LAN.)
