Vera 2 upgrade from UI4 & ZWave 2.78 to UI5 & ZWave 3.20 (advice requested)

I have a Vera 2 running UI4 & Zwave 2.78 with 9 physical devices, including 2 Insteon devices, a Trane Thermostat, a Kwickset lock and 2 secondary controllers; the logs are written to a USB stick. I have 3 virtual devices and have developed 14 scenes including custom luup code so it is not a huge system but is non-trivial given the custom luup code. My Vera Role is currently [tt]Suc SIS:YES PRI:NO[/tt] and I also have 2 bogus virtual devices that I am not able to delete.

I want to move the Vera2 to ZWave 3.20 running UI5 as a Primary Controller ([tt]PRI:YES[/tt]) with clean virtual devices and I am looking for advice on the best approach. Options that I am considering are as follows:

[ol][li]“High effort, low risk” - Reset Z-Wave Network (http://docs2.mios.com/doc.php?language=1&manual=1&platform=2&page=zwave_settings), Perform Factory Reset, Install UI5, Re-pair devices and rebuild network (approximate out-a new of-the-box Vera2 with UI5). Fairly certain this will achieve the desired end state but will be the most time consuming. I am interested in ways to easily migrate existing scenes and custom luup under this scenario.[/li]
[li]“Medium effort, medium risk” - Upgrade to UI5, Reset Z-Wave Network, Re-pair devices and rebuild network. Should achieve desired end state including [tt]PRI:YES[/tt] but almost as much effort as #1.[/li]
[li]“Low effort, high risk” - Upgrade to UI5, Update Z-Wave firmware using the “Hack to convert 2.78 to 3.20” (http://wiki.micasaverde.com/index.php/MigrateTo452). Should achieve desired end state but probably won’t return my Vera 2 role to [tt]PRI:YES[/tt] so perhaps try a “Shift controller from the advanced tab of the Z-Wave Device” to return the Vera 2 role to [tt]PRI:YES[/tt].[/li]
[li]“One I haven’t thought of…”. ;)[/li][/ol]

I wanted to heed the advice of the experts on the forum before I find myself wrapped around the axle so to speak. Please weigh in with your wisdom and tips and tricks to help a fellow advocate avoid bruised knees during a major upgrade.

Thanks in advance,
Bruce

What is your reasoning for wanting to go to 3.20? Besides your Vera not being the primary controller, and the virtual device issue, are you having any other issues with your setup? UI5 is still in beta and there are still bugs to be worked out. If UI4 is treating you ok and your zwave network is performing ok, I would stick with UI4 and 2.78 for the time being.

well, generic suggestions are always wrong. ::slight_smile:

I moved to UI5 and 3.20 - and all my HSM100 didn’t work correctly anymore. So i went back.
Conclusion: if you have the ez-motion 3-in-1 (alias HSM100) don’t go for it now.

Motion part worked, but not the temp and light readings; or something else?

you’re correct: temperature and light not waking up, therefore no events triggering my heating system…

My understanding of 3.20 is that it fixes the Z-Wave bug that fails to clear the routing tables. I have a light switch that frequently fails to transmit to Vera, or transmits very slowly, and need it to fix its routing table.

I want to easily upgrade to 3.20, but have little desire to re-create/re-pair my 24 devices and 27 scenes, especially the exceedingly fickle Monster scene controller. (I’d be a lot more comfortable if I knew how to print them all out so they could be re-entered quickly.) I also do not need to switch to UI5 at this time.

There is no need to redo your setup to migrate to 3.20. Following the instructions at the link provided above. Please make sure you have a complete backup of your Vera unit before doing this procedure just in case something does not go right.
