Hello everyone, long time no post!
My z-wave network has been running smoothly for a while now, so I’ve been paying it little attention. That’s how a well integrated domotic system should run, right? 
I’m a Vera 2 user, and I happen to use it as my home router. My desktop computer is wired to it, while everything else is wireless. Starting two weeks ago, on the first day of May, my Internet consumption has shot up through the roof. I only noticed that last weekend by doing a random check, as I haven’t noticed any major slowdowns of my connection. Careful checks of my network, one element at a time, revealed to me that it was Vera itself receiving and generating an insane amount of traffic, up to 10 GB a day. That traffic is split almost equally between downloads and uploads.
To stop the overusage, I’ve entirely removed Vera from my network, leaving me with the desktop computer directly wired in. I obvious want to resume using my wireless setup soon.
Does anyone know what could be causing this, or has any leads to offer?
Other than putting a sniffer on the wire to see what he traffic is, I can’t offer much. It sounds highly suspicious though, like a bad NIC or a compromised system.
Only replacement can fix a hardware problem, but a compromised system could be fixed by reflashing the system and restoring the configuration from backup. Make sure you backup the Vera and the Z-Wave network before doing anything.
I’m just guessing, perhaps others will be more informed on the matter. Did you call support?

Well, it looks like I got it back under control. I reset Vera to it’s factory settings, updated it’s firmware to the latest UI4 version, restored my Z-Wave network, and connected it back on the Internet. It’s holding so far, and I’ll keep monitoring it to be sure I’m out of trouble!
I have a feeling that it could have been someone hitching a ride on your wireless network. I can not see Vera generating that much of data in one day. It sounds like someone was using your connection for downloads.
I could have agreed with that, even though I had my security properly set up, if it wasn’t for the fact that the traffic surge continued after I turned Vera’s wireless off and disconnected my wired PC from it!
