Using Aeon Labs Microswitches with motion-sensing light switch

Howdy all,

Just wondering if anyone has tried using an Aeon Labs Microswitch with a motion-sensing light switch (such as a GE57884)? Granted, I would not have a motion report via the z-wave network, but for the most part, all I’m doing with the stand-alone z-wave motion sensor is turning on (or off) a light in a room. Seems like matching the AeonLabs microswitch and a motion light switch would give a more cost-effective solution for simply turning the light on/off either by motion or by z-wave command.

The thickness of this device combination concerns me, though, and it may not fit into a standard electrical box. Any thoughts/experiences?

Don’t quote me on this but that might not work at all. I’m assuming the motion switch on the wall needs power going to it, correct? When you hook up the micro controller There is no longer 120v going to that switch from what I know. It’s just an open or closed low voltage circuit like a relay. The 120v comes in the controller then pass threw only to the load. I would check into that some more.

A normal on off switch this is no problem, but that motion switch must have some power all the time to operate I’m thinking.

Hmmm… good point! That is probably exactly the case, and that would kill the idea.

Too bad someone doesn’t manufacture a z-wave capable motion-sensing switch.

It depends how you wire the switches to the load. If you connect them in series you have a logical AND where both must be active to turn on the load. If your put the switches in parallel you’ll have a logical OR such that if either device is active the load will be on. If you have issues in the AND configuration where the motion sensor doesn’t like its line input toggled off and on then put it first in the AND chain.

I think the motion sensing switch might be to specific. As your plan above is slightly cheaper, but for about 30 bux more or less you could just install a z-wave motion sensor, which would also give you more control, and a temp sensor atleast or more.

Or in My case I buy a 10.00 alarm motion and I add it to my alarm panel. So this route would cost me more actually.

This would work (I think) given that this is the logic I was going for, i.e., the light would turn on given motion OR z-wave command, though there would be no absolute z-wave control and no air-gap on the switch circuit.
