UPNP devices how do they work

I saw the options of that I could add an UPNP device. In the list I saw a lot of UPNP devices (also duplicates). I added my TV and it came in my dashboard fine, but I haven’t got a clue what I can do with the object. Are there any instructions on this cause I can’t find it.

I love the vera box but a good manual or more in dashboard help would be helpfull

It’s over 2 years later and it appears that nothing has changed :frowning:

I’ve added the UPnP devices on my network but they just appear under Devices and I can’t use them in new scenes.

I am disturbed by this. I am a new Vera user but am afraid I made a bad choice. There is no documentation and there is no support. Take a look at the forum. There are not many qualified individuals answering, if anyone answers at all.

I am having the same issue with upnp. There is not a single response in this forum.

And while I’m on a rant, why all of the questions to make a post? I’m logged in for god sake but I still have to try and determine poor captcha and answer 3 questions. What were they thinking? That’s nuts!

The Vera forum is one of the busiest, most in depth and complete forums in the Home Automation(HA) industry. I think you may be mistaken about the support and the forum. You’re right about documentation, but you should look at:

[ul][li]User Guides[/li]
[li]UI5 Documentation - You’re running UI7 and much has changed in the interface, but the concepts remain the same.[/li]
[li]Wiki - You’re probably not ready for this, but there’s lots of documentation and programming information.[/li]

[li]Search the forum with https://www.google.com/q=site:micasaverde.com+my_questions_here answers abound.[/li][/ul]

Notice the Contact Us section on the support page. It provides toll free numbers fro Vera tech support. This is the best support avenue. There are also options for email but this will most likely be slower.

If that’s not enough for you, then you definitely made a bad choice in entering the DIY home automation arena and you should consider a system with professional installation and support.

What issue? Not knowing how the UPnP protocol works? Vera's UPnP section can be used to manipulate a few CONTROLLABLE devices, such as some media players and other Veras. TVs and most other UPnP devices are consumers and are not CONTROLLABLE devices, so you can do nothing with them from Vera. You will be best off to completely ignore Vera's UPnP areas cited by the first post, there is nothing there for you.

There’s lots on Google about how UPnP works and Google returns 3,600+ results on this forum, so you can learn a bit from what’s already out there, if you wish.

And while I'm on a rant, why all of the questions to make a post? I'm logged in for god sake but I still have to try and determine poor captcha and answer 3 questions. What were they thinking? That's nuts!
Since the Micasa Verde(Vera) forum is so popular, it is a prime target for spammers. This forces the use of the ludicrous captcha blockade. The questions go away after you develop a posting history, you're almost there.

A rant maybe I’ve missed some points before too but…

The first thing i ask myself is “does upnp/DNLA” really(at least yet) work at all?

I’m not exactly sure what we have but we can count our Sony Bravio tv, Mythtv, Kodi, MediaTomb, BubbleUpnp etc. into the mix. None of them will recognise or work with all of the others.

Maybe in the future it could be but it seems pretty complicated for HA? And as things stand with incompatibilities, likely to lock you in to one vendors ways??

If you are trying to control audio/visual, you may need to invest in a Harmony Hub. It then connects to Vera to automate those systems. I am not ready to do that yet but I see myself, in the next year, getting a Harmony Hub, so my music comes one when I get home, and is turned off when I leave. I can also control the TV using my phone where a single button will turn on the receiver, switch the input to Roku, turn on the TV, switch the Roku to Netflix, and then I can select my show.

If this is what you are looking for, you have to get the pieces and parts to make them work.

There is a DNLA plugin for Vera. I found it a bit clumsy to use but it does act as a (I think the term is) control point . I can for example play music stored on my ‘general purpose server’ (a PC running OpenSuse) on my phone with it.

I have 2 upnp media servers running on that PC. The Vera plugin recognises MediaTomb but not Mythtv.

I didn’t look any further into the plugin when I had it installed as I couldn’t see me (other people’s use may differ) having any ‘real life’ use for it. If I wanted to play music or say watch a tv recording stored on the server on my phone via upnp, I would use an Android app (eg. BubbleUpnp) directly.
