Upgrade to Vera 3 or wait until the new Vera 4

Hi Guys,

I am currently running a Vera 2 box with the latest public beta firmware with no issues apart from it being a bit slow.

I know the MicasaVerde are looking to launch a new box, the question is do I wait for the new Vera Box and leapfrom the Vera 3 unit or just stay with Vera 2 and go down the Vera 3 Upgrade path.

My Current set-up uses the Wifi Module for my IP Security Cameras of which there is 9 and a 2 standard RJ45 wired cameras.

Coupled to this, is 4 temperture sensors, 2 leak sensors, 3 Smoke Detectors, 2 Motion Sensors, 3 Door Contact Sensors and about 20 plug in control modules for UK plug sockets, along with numerous plug-in from the developers here on the forum and also from the app store.

The system is controlled from not only my iPad and iPod but also my Windows based PC and my Windows Mobile Phone.

The system also has a Kingston Data Traveller USB Modem attached to it for data logging which actually helps the unit perform quite well and the entire system is run from several UPS and there is fallover 3G on my UTM should the fibre connection fail.

Any thoughts on this matter is much appreciated.

Ah, the age-old dilemma - I have the same quandary about iPads right now.

Several thoughts:

[ol][li]“if it aint broke, don’t fix it.”[/li]
[li]“First rule in government spending: why build one when you can have two at twice the price?” (from the film “Contact”)[/li]
[li]What are you trying to achieve?[/li][/ol]

I really do believe (1), but you mention things are slow, so perhaps that is the problem.
Regarding (2), why not buy a (relatively cheap) VeraLite and transition some devices/apps to there? (I did this).
For (3), if it’s just thinking about future expansion, then waiting might be OK.

Sounds like you’re itching to buy something, though ?!

My feeling is that my Vera 3 is about the right size for it’s task … About 100 devices and 40 plugin devices.
But I do not use the system monitoring and/or data logging yet. I think that will put it over it’s limits (Memory wise). If I had a Vera 4 I would start adding more monitoring activities.

4) If you do not know what the problem is … how can you fix it.
5) Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle - If we measure it we affect it!

So you offer up some memory to Heisenberg to learn how you are using resource and optimize based on Green … either money or the environment or both … you pick!

Does anyone know when the 4 will be released (or approx when)? I’m holding off upgrading my 2 as well.

I have been looking at some lightwave devices, but the adapter only works on the newer Vera 3 Box. I am prepared to wait as I have some other devices out there but I like the MIOS platform and it works for me.

If Vera 4 was build so it could be fitted into a rack or wall mounted like the old Vera 2’s and 3’s I would be happy, but even trying to get a spec list for the Vera 4 appears to be lost somewhere in the mists of times at Micasa Verde.

Would also love it if we could change the skins slightly on the box, i.e bundle a couple of skins on the the interface. I have to admit since having half my sockets and lighting on the vera box, my electrical consumption has dropped.

Why the skins?
You don’t actually use UI5 as your operational interface, do you??
I thought you were all iPads, iPods, PCs and phones???

Believe it or not I do actually use the UI5 interface for controlling devices.

Unless someone can suggest a programs that runs on Windows 7 and 8

Why not just a web page with HTTP links as controls?

Cheap and cheerful (and can look like whatever you like!)

When I hear of folks that use UI5 for control … I think of:
- YouTube

I am so glad we have Home Buddy, and Automator, and AutHomation, and HomeWave and others …

Ok, Can some one mention a decent interface to run on a Windows 7/8 Tablet (touchscreen) as I am looking to have this mounted in the hallway.
