Turning the thermostat on/off based on GPS positioning of the phone?

Hi there, I was going around the forum and read some posts that a thermostat can be turned on based on how your location from the house for eg: you are approaching the house, the GPS positioning on your cellphone can inform vera at your home to turn on the AC / heater. Same way if you forget to turn off the hvac, and leave your house and travel away the phone indicates vera through the positioning that the user is away and the scene will turn off the the AC.

Has anyone done this in real? Is it possible?

I can think of 2 possible ways to do this:

  1. try to use the Google Latitude plugin (search the forum) it works for some people.
  2. if you use an Android phone, then you can try using Tasker with AutHomation: http://forum.micasaverde.com/index.php/topic,12401.0.html

Thanks for your reply, and my apologies for responding late, but i would like to know more about this. I use an iPhone 5.
After spending few hours online to see tutorials or tips on how to configure vera with google latitude for thermostat control, i could not find anything, except few references that few people in here are using it.
Looking for steps on how to set this up. Any help will be appreciated.

Usually called “geofence”. Philips claims to do it with the Hue lights. It hasn’t worked for me, but I’ve spent no time debugging (Hue connected to veralite). The Nest thermostat may do it. I’m sure that large community has looked into it.
Personally I’m not comfortable with complicated thermostat control. Things can go horribly wrong. I do think it would be cool for my outside lights to brighten as I approach, however. If that system gets messed up it doesn’t matter much.

There’s an out-of-the-box solution for iOS that we built. Check out http://www.skylarkios.com/ . It addresses this exact need.
