Tuned Vera 2 vs Stock Vera 3 Performance

Previously my Vera 2 was running exceptionally slow on UI5. From my review of the logs and through basic Unix commands it appeared that my Vera was running out of memory which was a bottleneck to the system. I’ve since added two fast USB drives, one for USB logging and another to serve as swap space.

Using this setup my Vera has been performing well with little lagging, but I’ve been wondering if any other users of a similar setup have upgraded to the Vera 3 and seen a significant increase in performance or found other advantages from upgrading.

A bit more about my setup. I disable WI-FI and connect my unit directly to my network.

From the TOP command, I can see that my Vera 2 unit uses 1-2% of CPU normally, and at most around 43%. A faster CPU would complete more instructions in a shorter time, but if I’m not peaking frequently I’d expect this to be moot.

So I guess the real advantage would be more on board ram which is faster then an external USB drive. As far as the new zwave chip, not sure how this compares.

So I’m looking at three possible options

  1. I can upgrade to the Vera 3 for $150 by trading my Vera 2
  2. I can just buy the Vera Lite for about the same price plus shipping and use it with my Vera 2
  3. Do nothing and just Keep my Vera 2.

I really have no problem upgrading to the new Vera 3, it’s just that I bought my Vera 2 right before the 3 was released not knowing that a new model was coming down the pipeline.

Looking forward to seeing everyone’s feedback!

I had Vera2 and upgraded to Vera3. I can not believe how much quicker the Vera3 is. Been running vera 3 for over 3 months and it has been RockSolid.

I upgraded a Vera 2 w/ external USB drive to a Vera 3, and there is a notable performance increase. The Vera Lite also performs better (my dad upgraded his Vera 2 to a Lite); if you do not need WiFi and if you do not have a lot of Z-wave devices or plugins running, the Lite might be a good choice for you. If necessary, you can always repeat the USB drive trick to add memory.

The performance increase is most notable in the UI. My Z-wave network is now running more or less the way I want, and I rarely launch the Vera UI these days. If you control Vera solely via switches, scene controllers or smartphone apps, you will not note a big increase in responsiveness, at least that has been my experience. However, the Vera 3 is a lot more stable that the 2.
