Trying to set Vera 2 back as primary controller.

Hello,

Recently I got a Vera 2 UI4, but it has some previous configurations. It seems to be set as slave, so I get some errors when I try to different configurations (command failed: not primary controller).

From the documentation, I have seen how you can go from primary to secondary, but I don’t know how to do the reverse procedure. If I try the shift controller thing then i get command failed.

Can you help me please?

I have also a doubt regarding administration privileges at cp.mios.com. Being admin here is only useful when trying to configure Vera remotely, right? I mean, its not an issue if my user is not admin if I’m working locally with Vera.

Thanks a lot
and best regards.

Hi, again.

Factory reset could be a workaround. Is there any other solution?

Thanks.

@floyderman3d,

Welcome!

What Vera firmware version are you running, and which Z-Wave firmware version?

There may be a way to go from secondary to primary, but it sounds like you’d want to get rid of (at least) the previous Z-Wave configuration anyway, so for that you could try a [tt]Reset Z-Wave network[/tt], which would wipe out all the Z-Wave devices in the Z-Wave chip and may set the role back to primary controller.

But perhaps a factory reset is best, to start with a clean slate?

Thanks a lot for your reply.

Z-Wave version is 3.20. Vera firmware version is 1.1.1245. In the firmware section, the check of the version says that this is the last version. Is this right or should I patch to a more recent one?

I had already tried the Z-Wave Network Reset, but it didn’t seem to set the controller back to primary. But you are right, since I’d like to remove any configurations to start with a fresh one, the best thing to do could be performing the factory reset.

Thanks a lot.

Yes you want to do a complete wipe on that unit. I have to do the same to mine since I have a same problem with mine not being set to primary from the mfg when a got it a while back and did not want to play with it since I had about 50 devices connected to it.

Since I have migrated to HomeSeer, I can not wipe my unit. I’ll post how to do it is someone doesn’t chime in.

Btw yes HomeSeer is pricey, but you get what you pay for and the Z-Troller is awesome. Then again the company I work for is now a dealer for HomeSeer so I needed to migrate, plus the quirks with Vera on a network I was running was driving me nuts.

Thanks. It appears to be an undocumented feature of the [tt]Hack to convert 2.78 to 3.20[/tt] option to also reset the role to primary controller. You could give that a try.

But a factory reset is probably best. There is a [tt]Restore to Factory Default[/tt] menu option under [tt]Backup[/tt] for that.

You could consider updating to the newer version of the user interface: UI5 (as opposed to UI4 which you currently have).

Thanks for your answers!

I followed your advice Oti@ and upgraded to UI5. Nicer UI indeed.

By the way, I’m having problems with factory reset, it’s not doing its job. I opened a different thread with that new issue.

Best regards.

After many attempts I finally succeded to go to factory defaults, from web option in UI5. I also had to reset z-wave chip and z-wave network and at this moment my Vera2 is the primary controller.

Thank you all!

Best regards.

Glad it worked for you. I still have to do the same. I’ll give a whirl later on tonight.

Nice!

BTW, just checked, and both re-applying [tt]Hack to convert 2.78 to 3.20[/tt], and [tt]Reset Z-Wave network[/tt] are ways to change the role back to primary. At least on UI5.

Thank you all for your help, guys.

oTi@, in UI4 I tried so many times resetting Z-Wave Network with no result, so it’s most probably a benefit from UI5. When I upgraded to UI5, I was already focused on performing factory reset, so I didn’t try the reset zwave network option separately, taking for granted it would be of no use. Good to know!

Regarding the hack from 2.78 to 3.20, I was opting for a factory reset instead since I wasn’t sure if it would be safe to launch the hack in a zwave network that is already in 3.20, and not 2.78. And mainly because I wanted a fresh state of the controller too.

Best regards.
