Trane Thermostat association error

Just set up my Vera 2 (UI5) and added my Trane (schlage) thermostat TZEMT500B32MA last night. As soon as I added it I started getting “Failed at: Setting special association” error. It seems i can still adjust temp, schedules, and set up scenes. I tried searching the forums for this error message but didn’t come up with anything. Any ideas on what this error message means and how to go about troubleshooting?

When I have seen this error in the past was when I was trying to push an association under device options tab for the device (usually a switch) then associations. If you haven’t manually added anything here maybe there is something special with the device. You might try removing and re-adding it…

I tried removing the thermostat. As soon I did it automatically showed up under “no room”. I removed again and it showed up a minute later. On the thermostat I chose Zwave Install > Remove. Everytime I selected this option and went back it asked me if I wanted to Remove again. Not sure how to unpair!

When it showed up again in Vera, I saw the message purging associations in green and then failed at purging associations. I went to configure now and it keeps displaying the purging associations and then failed at purging associations.

How are you removing it from Vera? Are you putting Vera in exclusion mode? Our are you using the trash icon?

Just clicked the pretty trash can icon… I’m guessing by your question it’s not that simple and I need to investigate how to put the Vera in exclude mode.

Just like adding z-wave devices to vera (you need to include them), you need to do the same with removing devices. You can either do it from Vera’s UI or double tap the z-wave button to put the unit in exclusion mode. When double tapping the button, you will see the z-wave light flash very quickly, vera is now in exclusion mode and you can remove the tstat via the menu option.

The trash can is to remove dead or ghost nodes, as well as non-Z-Wave devices. If you try to remove a live Z-Wave node, the Z-Wave chip inside Vera won’t allow a forced delete like that, so the normal procedure is an exclusion as @garrettwp explained; this will tell both the node and the Z-Wave chip to forget about each other.

Sorry for bumping this old post but I have the same problem:
I have my trane thermostat paired with my veralite and everything appears to work but I have the message:
“Failed at: Purging associations”
Other times I see: “Device failed to configure” and have to re- include
I have excluded the thermostat and included several times- same problem
Any ideas?

Is Vera and the thermostat near each other?

  • Garrett

No. They are pretty far away. Does it make sense to keep them close for awhile?

Are there any other z-wave devices between the thermostat and vera? It sounds like a distance issue if you do not have any other z-wave devices that are between the two. Did you also perform a heal?

  • Garrett

There is one other device nearby- I did try a heal- still with that “Failed at: Purging associations” message

Try moving the Vera close. It sounds like a distance issue.

  • Garrett

will try that and report back- thanks!

I figured it out!!! I just pulled the thermostat off the wall, waited 5 seconds and then plugged it back in- it now works without any stupid errors!!! All that troubleshooting for naught! At least its working and hopefully some other poor soul will see this post and know what to do!

Mine is getting the same error mssg. Did pulling it off the wall really fix it?.

Any ideas on way to troubleshoot this. I had a trane non dual fuel stat on the wall that worked flawlessly . I suppose I can pull it off the wall and see.

I pulled it off the wall and waited 5 mins. Works fine for now.

I was having the same problem with the same stat. I included and excluded it multiple times. I repowered the Vera multiple times. I didn’t think of powering off the stat but that solved it for me. Thanks for y’alls help.

If the error comes back, here is another option.

After the RCS or Trane thermostat is included fully into very, it may still have the RED “Failed at Setting Special Association” Error underneath the device. Click the Wrench icon and then click the Settings tab and at the top change the “Automatically Configure” combo box to “No”. That will get rid of the error.
