So my 2 month old Vera2 decided today to lose communication with my Insteon modem. What this means, of course, is that every Insteon device is also missing. Fine, no problem I guess. So I unplug/replug it and it identifies it and then proceeds to locate all my Insteon devices. Here’s the problem, though. Now all my devices are unnamed, unconfigured, and unassociated with any of my scenes.
At this point I really have to question if it is worth my effort to redo hours worth of work just to, most likely, have to redo it all again in another couple of months when it decides to “lose” my modem again.
To me this is a very basic necessity that should have been implemented from day one. It should be assumed that at some point Vera will lose communication with a device. It should already be in place to reassign SAVED information with the device numbers as soon as communication is reestablished. It should ALSO already be associating devices to scenes based on their device numbers and not based on the arbitrary device name assigned to it.
Also, where is this famed “update” that was mentioned over a month ago that was supposed to include all these amazing fixes like getting my scene controllers to actually control scenes? That would be nice to see someday.
Maybe Z-Wave users are perfectly happy with this device, and that’s fine. However, this is advertised as an Insteon compatible device, and from where I’m sitting, that isn’t the case.
I even get this sort of thing happen with the sensors that are interfaced to vera via my alarm system from time to time. Sometimes, the device IDs will change, and to save time re-adding these devices to scene’s etc, I normally just reload a backup from when it was working!
Not ideal, but can be a real time saver. I’d imagine that this should work for Insteon also!

Yes, unfortunately I hadn’t noticed the backup ability until after I lost everything. Now the really upsetting part is that I had managed to luck into getting one scene controller to work before by manually changing the device type. However, this never worked for the other controllers and now won’t work for the controller I got it to work for in the past either. Realistically, this device does very little for me anymore without interfacing with my controllers (I was just living with the single controller until the delivered the update the promised).
Now I’m thinking I just made a mistake with this company and need to purchase something that will work.
As for the posts, I’m not sure what’s going on either. It seems they felt like restoring the original post and removing the one complaining about the removal. I give up.
If you can get past the learning curve with it, including setting up of scene controllers! it really is a great device, with a broad support of devices!
I think if you are waiting for this to control Insteon stuff, equally as well as the the Zwave stuff then, you may be better looking elsewhere I’m afraid.

Pretty much the only thing I want at this point is to not have to throw away either my 3 Insteon Scene Controllers or my Vera. If they would at the very least allow me to make Vera treat my device as a scene controller rather than a dimmer, I’m convinced it would work. However, Vera seems to believe it know what my device is better than I do, and I have not found any way to convince it otherwise.
