Text Message Questions

Is there a way to make the text messages shorter? Like Front Door opened by (name)? Right now I get this really long text message. I saw the video for 2gig and it shows their text message short and sweet.

My other questions is is there a way the text messages can come from just 1 number. When my kids come home from school and unlock the front door and then leave and lock the front door I will get a new text message from a different number every time they go in and out. I just want all the text from iVera to come from 1 number ???

You could try to use Prowl (iOS) or HomeBuddy (Android) as an alternative.
There is currently no way to (pre) format the built in Vera notifications

What about a new plugin that provides an UPnP service to send emails?

SND - SMTP Notificaction Device :slight_smile:

Usage:

luup.call_action( "urn:ap15e-com:serviceId:SND1", "SendMail", { msg = 'Hello world!' }, 5 )

@Ap15e
Found inspiration Ap15e??? Well, sounds interesting!
Is it different from this?

Or are you planning a different implementation for the SMTP socket?

It seems that the changes were made on the MiCasaVerde side a few months ago.
In the past the SMS messages were 1 line, 1 SMS message, now it takes up 3 SMS messages.
They just need to go back to the old, correct way.
Both the email and SMS are the same size. The SMS just needs to be cut down to the old 1 line message.

I do not have unlimited SMS so I have to be very careful about how I get notices from Vera until this is “fixed”.

@Davidlee
That is odd behaviour, my text notifications are nice and short and only 1 message long. I just cant (pre)format the contents of the message, thats all.
Can you explain a bit more or even place a screenshot or something?

See @davidlee’s previous thread.

Sorry i missed that… maybe it would have been clearer if the discussion stayed within the thread…
Anyway, ill check if my messages are shorter or our text length in Europe is larger (i think 168 characters per SMS)
Problem might be that i dont notice since my iPhone simply displays it as a single message…

My Blackberry and my wifes iPhone all receive 3 messages per notification; however they are all concatenated back into one, which is part of the multi part SMS standard that supports this.

My post in the other thread that was referenced, would have cost me nearly $100 if it wasn’t for AT&T’s great customer service team retroactively moving my wifes phone to an unlimited plan.

I’m all for a better notification service that supports custom message!

@Strangely

I would suggest pushmessages by Prowl then to your iPhone, take a look at the link i posted earlier.
Will have a look around whats available for Blackberry, havent seen remote Z-Wave apps for the RIM OS

SMTP might be a good option there as Blackberries strong point is email.

Using those two make your notifications as customizable as you can get it
(and free)

Henk

It would be nice if there was an option to choose either SMS or MMS.
Example: xxxyyyzzzz@mms.att.com uses MMS which only sends long text in 1 transmission as opposed to 3 or 4 texts it currently uses with SMS. MMS is cheaper when sending more than one transmission at a time. Also, it looks nicer on some mobile devices that tags concatenation messages (ie: 1-of-3, 2-of-3, etc).

Of course, it would help if the messages weren’t so verbose in the first place.

It appears that they use email-to-text gateways for the U.S. (I guess that’s why you put your provider in), but regular SMS for ‘Other’ countries. Presumably for cost reasons. And may also partially explain why this hasn’t been ‘fixed’.

(The SMS for ‘Other’ countries just has the body part of the email, minus the “Regards” etc.)

Henk[/quote]I should configure this really but my wife doesn’t care (I’ve since removed her notifications), and my SMS messages are on my work phone :slight_smile: Not sure SMTP would work for me either as my email is tied to a corporate exchange server / BES server combo.

Did you consider plain push messages by Prowl on your iPhone?

@DA INFERNO,
Bit of a hijack, but I guess part 1 of your question has been talked about. :slight_smile:

About your other question, what kind of number did you mean?

oTi@ I think it's the incoming txt message send number that MCV is using. Each txt message comes through from a different number so one ends up with numerous txt entries rather than a grouped list all sorted under a phone contact.

And if it’s an iPhone is a PITA to delete the individual txt’s.
At least that’s how I read it.

JOD.

The thing with Prowl is you have to set up a scene. In the kwikset locks you dont have to set up a scene. I just set up notifications on the kwikset and it sends me sms every time some one puts a code in or locks the door. I dont want to have to make a scene every time that happens. Just would be nice if Micaseverde can just fix it or give me and option on what I want my text to say.

That’s how I read it too, i.e. the ‘phone’ number. Was indeed curious about what specifically was the problem with that. My simple phone always shows a long list of single entries. :slight_smile: PITA to delete indeed. In fact, it also always asks about saving unknown numbers in the phonebook. Double PITA. ;D

Right; a bit of work to setup the notifications that way; but it works.

Yep. An enhanced notification feature apparently is not high on the priority list. But who knows, perhaps they'll put Prowl (and other app) support in there as notification options, to lower costs. Maybe in UI5?
