Tempature Control for Fish Tank

I have a 120 Gallon Saltwater Tank. It has a chiller that I can control on an appliance switch. I need some way to read the water temp and control the on and off based on that. The glass is pretty thick so I doubt anything stick on would work. an it needs to read the temp every few mins or so. Any ideas?

HM-TS001 in a zip tie bag? Now although I jest, if you weren’t too bothered about it floating on the top of the tank then I guess it would work so long as you get an leak proof bag of some sort like below:

It has a 30 gal sump under so I can hide that

You could use a Dallas/Maxim DS18S20 and bring the reading back in via RS-232.

Do you have a simple circuit design for this?

You can buy pre-built kits from hobbyboards.com

1-wire to RS-232 Converter - http://www.hobby-boards.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=28

There is a USB converter also - http://www.hobby-boards.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1503

Temperature kit - http://www.hobby-boards.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=25_27&products_id=108

with the temperature kit I would wire the temp sensor off the board using RJ45 and use some protective coating on the end where the sensor is and drop it into the kit.

Fortezz will be coming out with a temperature sensor with an external probe.

How do I connect the rs232 to Vera? (I’m new so be patient)

You’ll need an USB to RS232 cable/converter. There are a list of supported devices here:

Or WizNet WIZ110SR
