Table Lamp Hack

Hey Forum,

One of my biggest peeves about Zwave is how guests can bypass the lamp modules by simply turning off the switch at the lamp. The node is still active, but it no longer controls the lamp.

I’ve been thinking about re-wiring a lamp with a zwave module (Aeon Smart Energy Illuminator, or Jasco Dimmer). The toggle switch at the lamp would be replaced by a contact switch; the contact switch would control the zwave dimmer settings.

Does anyone have any experience with this? A zwave lamp seems like a no-brainer, if only there were a way to relay the zwave dimmer button to the lamp itself. That way, if a guest were to turn a lamp on or off, it would be reflected on the Vera.

Thanks in advance for any tips or suggestions!

I posted about Z-Wave enabling a lamp recently. So long as the lamp has room to hide the microswitch module, this should be an easy project.

Or just remove the switch handle/chain from the lamp.

Thanks @Z-Waver. That’s exactly what I was thinking of.

@Aegis, I tried that method first. With a remote, the solution worked for a couple weeks. But when houseguests came (over the holidays), the remote solution was un-intuitive. People resorted to unplugging the devices when they couldn’t find the switch!
