Simple question, but never a simple answer - Upgrading Vera1/UI2 to Vera2/UI4

I am currently running a very stable and reliable Vera1 on UI2 (1.0.994) but I really want to upgrade my system. I have made no fewer than five attempts, varying in approach, to upgrade my Vera1/UI2 to my Vera2/UI4. The first attempts included trying to upgrade my Vera1 to the latest UI4 firmware. That failed and I spent hours on the phone with MCV support eventually restoring my Vera1 back to 1.0.994 (UI2) with my network in tact. Then I tried the migration approach described in the Wiki, but after repeated attempts to restore my Vera1/UI2 backup (with zwave firmware) onto my Vera2, I was always left with a bricked Vera2 that required a factory reset. So, I have a few simple questions that I’m hoping an expert user out there who has gone through this can answer for me so I don’t spin my wheels needlessly…

  1. Should I be able to upgrade my Vera1 running UI2, firmware 1.0.994 to UI4, firmware 1.1.1062? Will this upgrade require me to rebuild all of my scenes? Will it require me to rebuild my virtual devices as well?

  2. Assuming #1 is possible (and it hasn’t worked for me so far), and assuming I’ve rebuilt all my scenes and now have my system back up and fully functional on Vera1 running UI4 on the latest firmware, will I be able to migrate everything over to Vera2, inclusive of scenes, etc?

There seem to be so many different answers to these questions I honestly don’t know what I can or cannot do. I’m just trying to find the least painful path to move my existing system onto Vera2 running UI4.

Any words of wisdom would be appreciated.

This is what drives me nuts about this product and company. MCV should clearly answer this question on this board. I am in the same boat as you and frankly, I am just going to stay on UI2 with my Vera 1 since everything just works and I just don’t have the time or energy to get it working on UI4. MCV just shoots themselves in the foot with this epic lack of support. They would make more money if they made it easier on their existing users to upgrade. I’ve been with these guys for over 4 years thinking they would get better at, but sadly they got worse. I’m not a geek or a hobbyist so it needs to be super easy to upgrade and not a rebuild your scenes/network scenario.

Guys please help as I am going round in circles here and Tech support are being far too slow to react.

I had cause to flash the firmware on my Vera 2 which is causing me considerable pain. I went to the Wiki to flash Vera 2 and downloaded the files etc. After finding an XP machine (XP… really???) I was able to load onto my unit the firmware off the website.

My issue now is that Vera appears to have changed her serial number, this apparently can’t be done… well it has. She now thinks she is registered to user Amistrad.

Has anyone any ideas or experiance of this or ever flashed a vera 2?

I have just noticed also that the MAC address of my unit has now changed too. The sticker on the back is not now what is applied to the unit. I can only guess that the Vera 2 firmware on the Wiki is specific for a unit

*** Anyone thinking of Flashing hold off*****

Has anyone managed to do this?

If so can you tell me what the outcome was, I am having serious difficulty.

I am not sure that MCV tech support know the answer, I have just rung them and they asked me to send a picture of my units label and when they recieve it I will be able to log in… this can’t be true as how are they remotely going to contact my unit???

If I go to cp.mios it gives me someone elses unit (won’t work though says data won’t load)

I have flashed my Vera 2 in the past, and the procedure worked fine. Seems like something is wrong with the persistent data in your Vera; MCV / Tech Support are probably the only ones that should handle this.

Flashing the V2 resets it back to factory defaults with a generic FW, it's not specific to a certain unit. Did you purchase your Vera new? Have you ever sent your Vera back to MCV for repair/replacement? @Amistrad is/was a registered Vera user.

My previous responses were detailed a response to @smarttechnology in MiCasaVerde » General » Upgrading » Upgrading vera2 to UI5 HUGE PROBLEM! See:

The Vera does have two MAC addresses and depending on certain settings within Openwrt and your network configure, automatic, manual, wifi on or wifi off etc, you can force a change btween them. This has been identified several times within previous post and the flash procedure should not give a new MAC.

I can not remember the exact between the LAN/WAN MAC addressees but under one condition, you will not be able to connect externally without creating a DMZ which would effectively expose you whole system - not a good thing. However, as previous stated, there are methods to force the change and initially you might consider just defaulting the network settings before heading to do other changed.

I have just reset a Vera 2 back to UI4 today as a test of the other related cross post and tomorrow ( it is the middle of the night here) i will hopefully remember and do some screen captures to show this.

Thanks guys for your assistance.

Dennis from MCV was stummed on this too and spend 2 hours dialed into my sytem rectifying it. The issue appears to be that the NVM on my Vera 2 was not locked when the unit was shipped so when the flash upgrade happened it wiped all the data from the NVM and replaced it.

This caused the MAC to completely change together with the Serial number, SSID, WiFi password everything. This meant that I was unable to anythig with the unit and the good guys at MCV had to dial into my pc on a logmein session to change it all.

I am now back up and running.

Cheers

Hmmm…I wonder if this was my issue too, which Daniel characterized as “lower level than just a firmware flash” to correct. I didn’t do any diagnostics to determine if the IP & MAC had changed, but the symptoms sound the same.

Just FYI

Attached is the four setting variables that are either Auto or Manual configure with either WIFI enabled or not enabled.
The results disaplay the changes to the MAC address.
Now, as this is set to a pre-assigned IP address, it will get the same IP; however, if this was not set, it would result in a new IP address being assigned to the changed MAC address.

Also posted same response here due to cross post http://forum.micasaverde.com/index.php/topic,10930.msg79937.html#msg79937
