Searching for "invisible trip wire" type of detection switch

I have a hallway with a motion-sensing switch, but it’s your typical 170 degree field of motion, infrared detector. What I’m really after is a switch that will activate once an invisible line is crossed, similar to how garage door sensors work if you’re walking into the garage while the door is still closing. I’m tried of walking past the hallway entrance and having the light turn on. I want it to activate when I enter the hallway. I’ve already tried masking the sensor with electrical tape as well as other work-arounds. I’m ready for a real solution.

I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find anything. This doesn’t even need to tie in to my VeraLite, but I figured this would be a good place to ask. Is there a specific type of technology I should be searching for? Has anyone else tried something like this?

They’re called Break Beam sensors. I’m not aware of any Z-Wave ones, but you might be able to rig something up.

Perhaps relocating your motion sensor (think behind you or on ceiling) might give you the desired results.

Yes, I would use the Fibaro motion sensor easy to install battery is long lasting and easy to change, and it is easy to angle and point. I would put it on the ceiling near the entrance to the hall angled downward and away from the hall entrance.

THANK you!! I knew had to just be searching for the wrong terms!
