Schlage Lock fail - setting user configuration

Hi, I’m able to pair up the Schlage lock with Vera, but I can’t seem to configure it. I keep getting this error message “job failed: aborted: failed at: setting user configuration”
Any feedbacks would be greatly appreciated!

  1. check to see if you have the proper USB stick. There were some earlier versions that did not work the new security class. dongle version 2.40
    check the wikki http://wiki.micasaverde.com/index.php/Schlage_Lock

  2. have you upladed the latest firmware to VERA?

  3. once you get a "failed pairing " you probably will need to do a device uninstall.
Follow the directions. on the wikki.
You can also do a hardware reset by following the instructions at
    http://www.part2.schlage.com/docs/System_Reset-a.pdf

for add/remove the lock I prefer method 2 for both install and remove.

Read through the entire proceedure first.

Thanks for helping as I am new to vera and z wave.

To answer your questions:

  1. I have the proper USB stick for sure ( reason below )

  2. Yes, using 602 right now, unless I should use the 604 beta

  3. I can pair but I cannot config. Actually pairing is a breeze with the instruction from this forum. But config is a different story.

After I pair it ( after 12 hrs of battery installation), which works the 1st time thanks to instructions on this forum I tried to config it.

First 4 attemps failed with various reasons ( unable to get info on node, security class…) , then it take like 30 min and works for the 5th time which I test with dashboard (the lock and unlock is almost right away).

Played with it a couple times and the lock stopped responding.

Attempted about ten times after and got 1 successful config ( test with dashboard and mobile app ) and the lock stop responding short after.

Did the unpair and pair again, tried to config without any success (fail at setting user config ).

Please note that I cannot add usercode ( keep asking me for the 4 digit pin code which I did type 4 digit ) but I can remove codes.

What gives? Please help!!!

pin codes - there is a issue if you are using IE 6 or 7 . Try using Firefox
I reported the issue buy It has not been fixed yet. Maybe in 604 I have not tested it yet.

It take some time to configure the lock. The lock as well as all battery devices must be awake.
Go to the Adveaced tab in Vera
then click on logs, click Verbose logging
Wake the by entering a code at the lock.
and then click show Zwave jobs.
Look for the lock in the job listing
Go back to devices and click configure.
It will take some time to go through the entire configuration ( all device classes and pin codes)
If you get errors wake the lock again and click configure from the Device menu.
If you are still getting errors then there might be a communication problem.
Poor signal .
You may need to add a Zwave device in between the lock and vera. The device cannot be a battery Zwave must be always on like a light switch.

Let us know if this worked

yes, i am using IE7, but i manage to add codes using the lock and it shows up in vera.

Tried what you suggested, and a new window pops up with no codes, just date and time label.

Funny thing is i uninstall the lock, put it right next to vera and put batteries back in, config (blue cog) and while it’s configuring i can get the lock to respond but the config still fails.

After i put the lock back to the door (have to disconnect the wire) , the lock stop reponding again.

This seems really strange that the lock responded without going thru config.

Please help

did you click verbose logging?

config takes about 10 minutes to complete for the lock

I’m not sure about if you actually did a reset:
un-install is not the same as a factory reset.
You should always un-install/ un-pair a device rather than doing a factory reset.

If you reset the lock you will have to re-pair it to vera again.

How far is the lock from vera once installed at the door?
They say 75-100 feet
This may work in open space , I have yet to see it in action.
40 can be a problem , that is why schlage sells a light module with the kit.
But they cant do sensor and thermostats >>>>>

Thanks zmistro for your help.

From my 2 previous successful config, it’s take close to 30 mins.

I believe i did a un-install/ un-pair and then pair them again by using taking vera close to the lock and doing the hold/press black/red button sequence.

After the reset, I repair it back to vera but i still cannot config it yet, sometimes the lock respond to my command despite the config is not successful and i cannot seet what state the lock is in from vera.

The lock is 10-12 ft away from vera and I will try adding a plug in node in between later this week.

Can’t get verbose logging doesn’t seem to work either, checked the box and click on show z wave jobs, a new window pops up with just time “datetime” label on the upper left corner, nothing else.

Update: just used another pc to submit ticket 567

verbose logging and show z wave job here won’t show my z wave jobs ( new window pop up without any code , just the date/time lable shows up on upper left hand corner)

If you can. when the window pops up do a re-fresh.
If there is still no log I wonder if there is no network

Have you tried to pair using your pc and method 2 ?
You get much more feedback
I realize it can be a pain in the butt if the lock is not near.

If you wish me to contact by phone i have a bit of time. I am not a Micasa employee. Just a distributor/integrator

that’s great!

this might sound stupid but what’s ur ext when i call mi casa verde?

none… I said I am not an employee of micasa.
I own a home automation company.
just trying to help out.

ooops , my mistake.

Can i use method 2 by taking my lock close to the PC , but i have to disconnect the wires before putting them back in the door?

Yes method 2 is ok ,
it makes no difference if you remove power from the lock.

Just remeber that you need to be within radio zwave distance from Vera to the lock unless you have another Zwave module like a dimmer or light in between.

ok, let me try that.

Another strange question, how come i can lock and unlock using vera ( within my home network and internet from outside ) while the lock fail to config?

It sounds like you are paired properly.
THe config will need some time to complete.
Wake the lock by entering a code. then immediatly click the config on the vera screen for the lock .

ok, i added 5 more plug in device to the network and 3 of them are between lock and vera and 1 is further away from vera than the lock.

press the code on the lock and hit config without any success, any idea?

I Really don’t know what to say here.
Just adding modules is not the answer.
I think what you may have done is a corrupted install.
If the Lock remotely unlocks and locks but fails to configure an all other devices are ok then something is amis in the network that might not be repairable without a reset.

  1. when you paired the lock did you get a Green light on the lock at the end of the pairing ,about 5-15 seconds after the last step? If no green then its not paired properly

  2. is there a possibility that the one of the other devices or modules did not install correctly? do they all configure well.

  3. what brand are they? Some of the intermatic home settings plug in modules may not properly relay the lock commands from what I hear. We don’t use plug in modules as they can get moved and screw up the network.

  4. If this were my problem I would do an un-install for each and every module including the lock . Then I would reset the Zwave network in Vera and start from scratch. At this point it may be faster.

5)Plan your layout. How far is the lock from Vera? If you live in a large home or a long ranch house and vera is several rooms away from the front door you will probably need a module inbetween.

  1. You may want to add the lock and get it configured before installing at the door if it is not already. If you move the lock to the door and Vera fails to communicat then the signal is too weak to reach. A module is needed to repeat the signal .
if you are using plug in modules then start with one. include it into the network with the lock nearby. Make sure the lock and the module are working properly and then relocate them where they will be used. It is ok to use this method for a couple of devices. but not for a whole house. They nee to be installed where they will stay.

When you include Zwave devices start at the closest to vera and work your way outwards in a star pattern.

Thanks zmistro, your help is very much appreciated.

to answer your questions:

  1. yes, green light and the lock showed up in device (asked to be put in a room)

2)all other device, including plug ins, in wall switches and a handheld device config well without a hitch.

3)ooops, all plug ins are intermatics. I do have a ACT zrf 113 too. plug a leviton basic hand held.

4)When you say uninstall, do you mean “remove the device as dead node”? then pair and config again?

  1. I live in a very small condo…wish I had a big house and there’s plenty plug in modules between lock and vera.

6)So i should uninstall the lock by “remove the device as dead node” , then bring the lock to vera to pair and config, if successful, then unplug the wires in the lock and put it back at the door, correct?

when ever you install /uninstall use vera or the dongle.
You can only use remove dead node to remove a broken node/device.
If you try to remove a node by " remove dead node" and it still works it is actually still thinking it is installed.
You must uninstall a device by either using the dongle or if it’s portable bring it close to vera and use " Zwave options" then Exlude -one -node- low or normal-power then click go .
Look at the screen and you shoud get a success.

If you think that you may have not excluded any device properly you should do a remove and re install all the devices as it may be too dificult to repair the network for you.

The ACT ZDP 100 is the only ACT product currently supporting the Beam technology to route messages to the lock.
Being that you are in a condo the lock sounds like it is close enough to Vera no to need to relay through another device.

Great advise zmistro.

I finally get it to work by doing the following:

  1. master reset on vera ( hit the black button twice)
  2. uninstall all devices with what zmistro said below
  3. pair and config lock right next to vera with the lock powered
  4. unplug the wires on lock while keeping batteries in
  5. reinstall lock

Now, where’s everyone else, including the mi casa folks? Is this lock issue beaten to death or what?

Anyway, I must thank zmistro again. Without your help, my lock and vera(with a noob like me ) will never work.
