schlage link and distance to vera

the thirty feet or closer benchmark from the wiki pages…is that just for setup or is that for operation as well?

You need to have it within a couple feet for pairing (setup), for operation the closer the better. My experience is the following (which I do not completely understand);

I have a 3 story building as follows (standard construction, no concrete in floors and no steel as far as I know, there are stone fireplaces and an elevator shaft in the center however);

| | |
| E | F |
|_____________ | |
| | |
| C | D |
|
| |
| | |
| A | B |
|
| _____________|

Units A & B have entrances w/Link Deadbolts in the front of the building
Units C,D,E & F have entrances w/Link Deadbolts in the rear of the building

Vera is in a closet in Unit D that is on the rear wall and adjacent to Unit C. The Link for that Unit is about 5 feet away and through the wall into C the lock in C is probably 10 feet away from Vera. Obviously the doors in E & F are directly above the ones in C & D. I have an RP200 plugged in the wall in unit E about 5 feet from the lock in that unit on a wall adjacent to unit F. The locks in the doors for A & B are via a hallway in in front of the building, they are about 10 feet apart. I have an RP200 plugged into the front wall of unit B about 10 feet from the lock in that unit which would place it about 20 feet from the lock in A (through two wood doors).

The “map” for the communication between these are as follows;

The RP200 in unit E talks to the locks in units C, D, E & F
The RP200 in unit B talks to the locks in units B, D & F as well as the RP200 in unit E

The lock in A does not communicate at the moment, I am going to order more RP200’s and put one in every unit.

The strange thing is why does the RP200 in B talk to E but E doesn’t talk to B? Why can the RP200 in B talk all the way two floors up and over one unit to talk to the RP200 in E, but it cannot talk to the lock in A only 20 feet away? I originally put the RP200 that is in B right now in A and had to move it around a little, I figured out that plugging it into the wall in the center of that unit (imagine the building above with a side section view the same, so each unit would have a wall through the middle to make it two rooms basically) made it able to communicate with the rest of the system and control the lock in unit A (but not in B). I moved it to unit B and it was still talking to unit A, but not B so I figured, great, this will work, if it talks to A from B then surely it will talk to the lock in B after a heal network. So I ran the heal network and the result was that I did talk to B afterwards, but ceased to talk to A for some reason. Very strange.

I think the reason Schlage includes an RP200 in their kit is because it is pretty much necessary for reliable communication.

Not to jump too far off topic, but would the owner of a schlage door lock (not deadbolt) mind posting here, the measurements from handle center to the top of the case? I’ve googled for a long time, and can’t find a thing, and the local stores don’t have that model in stock. I’ve found that the entire case length is 6.8 inches, that’s all I can find. I have a 5.0 inch Center-center door knob & deadbolt, keyed, is the reason I ask. Hoping I won’t have to buy a new door just to install a lock!
Thanks.

try this Sandman http://www.part2.schlage.com/

From schematics I’ve looked at and now measured in Photoshop, the handle-center to top-of-case distance is almost exactly 4.0 inches.

Hope this helps.

I’ve been all over that link page, and nothing except the total dimensions. Have also been many to other pages, with nothing telling me exactly what I want to know.
Thanks for the attempt, LS. :slight_smile:

Call Ed Thompson at Gokeyless.com, he has them in stock and would probably be happy to measure it for you.

Just to be clear, the measurement I describe above was done from a schematic of the “outside” portion of the lock, based on the 6.8 inches you mentioned. If you were instead referring to the “inside” housing, let me know so I can delete that (and this) post.

I measure approx 4.125 inches from lever center to top of lock.

Their old website has some dimensional info & pix, but still not exactly what you’re looking for.

The Schlage link website also has a tech support #. I’m sure they could give you specifics.

What exactly do you need a measurement of? I have one but would have to dig it back out of the box.
