Please! Nobody should be uncomfortable about asking questions in the forum of any manufacturer! That’s what they are there for! Most manufacturer’s forums are full of posts made by people with less than, say, 50 posts. There are reasons for that. Ask away!
I’m not uncomfortable asking questions, because you are correct when you say that this is their purpose. I do think that the member should at the least exercise due diligence and perform a basic search to see if that question has already been asked.
I personally find it hard to believe that the problem I am having or the question I need answered has yet to be asked.
In the words of Garrett:
SEARCH THE FORUMS!!!
@Vodden, HS’s forum search function is almost as bad as Vera’s. In order to find things I use the same trick that we use here- goto google and use this search:
site:board.homeseer.com “your search terms here”
I knew this would work in the other forums too, I have not however put it to use. It’s probably time.
Thanks for the reminder.
I’m running a 4th generation NUC i5 with a Tranquil PC, it’s an older version of one of these: http://www.tranquilpcshop.co.uk/abel-b2-chassis/ No fan, no moving parts (SSD)
It’s running Windows 8.1 and pretty much is solely dedicated to HS3. 8GBs of RAM and my z-wave is controlled via Z-NET. Yes, it’s overkill but I don’t want to worry about memory issues ever.
HS3 has its quirks to learn but I’m pretty happy with it so far.

Thanks for the info.
They are hesitant to post free plugins in their plugin store because they make a small profit from all paid plugins that are sold. Many free plugins do things that paid plugins do so logically they don’t want to thin their margins. But they do have dedicated places on their forums for posting the free plugins and discussing them.
Just Wanted to post my experience. I was discouraged by the hardware limitations of vera and nudged by the 50% off sale to switch over to homeseer. so far the hstouch app on the phone (android) was quite easy to setup and runs reasonably. I was dreading going around and re-adding all of my nodes into homeseer. (quite a few in wall micro switches) I tried the same trick that I used switching from my vera3 to the VeraEdge and it WORKED!! there is a controller option in homeseer to import from another controller and then select controller shift in vera’s zwave settings. it then imported all of the zwave settings from my vera to my ZNet. I need to test all of my nodes but so far everything imported except the secure door locks. it even copied over the associations I had setup. (can’t say the same for Vera3>VeraEdge). now I’m just wrapping my head around the new system and the price of the plugins. some are reasonable and some are ridiculous. the harmony plugin costs almost half of what i paid for the hub.
This is very welcome news. I’ve been dreading the switch for the exact same reason so I really hope this works for me too!!
Keep you posted!
I wish I had thought of this, but it really didn’t take me that long. Especially with NWI (Network wide inclusion). Most of my stuff I was able to exclude and include into HS without moving anything. I’m glad it worked for you though and I’m glad to see someone else over there.
The only thing I’m lacking over at HS is Forum participation. its one of the things I liked about the Vera.
I think I need to expand upon the above. It’s not that the forum participation is bad over at HS. I get answers rather quickly over there. My comment on “lacking” is that it seems to be a place to go to research problems where as I think that the Vera forums have a bit more substance. Some of this is in the form of a few build threads, and some in the “what did I do to my Vera today”. It could be a perception thing as well. The best thing about the Vera was it’s forum and the resources contained in it. For HS, the forums are not needed as much until you have an actual problem.
When I say that it is the only thing I have issue with, it should be noted that it is a very small thing.

I agree with you on this point. I find the forums painfully difficult to navigate, but I have resorted to the Google method of searching for what I am looking for, and I have had far greater success.
Here, it seems like there’s always someone ‘right there’ to answer your question. Richard for PLEG, Z-Waver for wiring and any Z-wave technical question, etc. Maybe it’s just the familiarity on Vera forums, but I certainly agree with you here.
I would like to migrate my personal build thread over to HS and continue it there since that appears to be the controller I will be using going forward, so maybe I can start a trend.
I would also like to see a “What did you do with HomeSeer today” thread as well. A lot of excellent and creative ideas are shared in a thread like that.
Most of the people on the HS forum aren’t asking the same simple questions over and over again like here. There are more posts here but they seem to be less sophisticated on the whole. I think it’s very rare for a question to go unanswered on the HS forum just as here. Personally I like both forums a lot. They do each have a different feel though.
Bingo.
And that’s purely MCV’s fault. If there was better documentation, education, and knowledge base technology (ie, an organized and searchable forum from WITHIN the forum, maintained stickies, updated FAQs, updated wikis, etc) then we wouldn’t have the same drivel posted over and over and over and over again. I always try to search first, asking a question that’s already been answered dozens of times does nobody any good.
This forum is great for finding out about the best Z-Wave light switch or the like because there always seems to be someone on the first page asking such question. I rarely ever see such posts on the HS forum.
Will HS let you do an 11 page thread on switching to Vera?
These forums are the most open and permissive that I have ever seen from any manufacturer.
Valid point is taken.
I’m going to shut up now.
Sorry everyone. Wasn’t my intention.

I really don’t think this was a shot at you S-F, but maybe at the lack of involvement and presence from Vera.
I’m guessing you never expected this to happen nor did you think that your one post would drive such an involved conversation.
I do think this thread has become somewhat of a pitch for HomeSeer and that isn’t what I want. I want HA enthusiasts to be happy with their hobby. Vera has it’s merits as many members of this forum will express. I have expressed my thoughts and experiences for the members of this forum who were wondering. I think I am in a good position to have done this because I was a very involved Vera user and am now a very involved HS user.
I encourage anyone who is curious about HomeSeer to check out their forum instead of continuing to make this thread a HomeSeer advertisement.
I wasn’t trying to fault anyone or suggest that anyone shut up. I have been enjoying this thread. Furthermore, this is not much different that the openHAB thread that ran on the front page for months just a few months ago.
But, like I said, this is the most open and permissive manufacturer’s forum I have ever seen. It’s one of the pros of the Vera forums.
