Running Wife's Drip System

Hello, sorry for newb question,

I know nothing about irrigation systems beyond that they run on 24v.

My wife has an extensive drip system, using standard garden hose fittings at the source and a Lowes type manual timer. The water source is a well. I would like to control via Vera.

I could put an outdoor switch module on the well pump, but doing that would let the system drain down the well pressure tank and lose prime - not good. I could use the switch module to feed a transformer, but I don’t know what kind of valve I would need with garden hose type fittings.

Guidance appreciated!

Thanks, Bob (beachboync)

You can use something like a Zone (Taco is one manufacturer) valve for a heating system.
They come in 1/2 and 3/4 and 1" inch copper or pipe thread.
They are 24 volts. They have some that use 24 volts to actuate … remove the power and they self close. Nice for when there is a power failure!

I actually use this as a loop control to circulate water in the winter.
I have a 1" water line coming into the house from rain water collection tank. Tanks are up the hill.
I also have a 1 1/2 line that goes up the hill to fill the tanks from a small collection tank at the house. In the winter I actually use the house pump to send water back into the 1 1/2 line. As a result I have water flowing in all of the outside lines.

I do this for 15 minutes on the hour when Google Plugin indicates the temperature is below 36.
I also do this 4 times a day everyday independent of temperature. The result is that I circulate all of the water in the storage tank (through my filters and UV light) every 2 months.

Cool. You are obviously far ahead in automation than I am!

I can cut the PVC and put in a tee fitting and then work out the other end.
