Ring Video Doorbell - Vera?

Would I be better off with separate components such as an Aeotec Doorbell combined with a camera? But there’s no intercom with this, right?

I have the ring door bell and I love it, I am sure that in time someone will figure it out. The big thing for me is that is works

Indeed! It works, and it works pretty good. It’s amazing to see what happens at your front door that you wouldn’t know about otherwise. I have a tile in imperihome that i can manually launch the ring app when it senses motion or somebody rings the bell; it happens quick enough that i never feel i miss anything, and if i don’t see it live, it’s recorded.

Hi Treetop,

You have my interest, tile? I have tried the Wink app however with no success. It should also control the motion part of the ring so my other camera kick in but no luck… How about explaining what you did and how it functions.

Thanks
T

@Newzwaver: Sorry, i may have misled you into thinking i have a live “tile” of the ring video feed; that is not the case. What i do have is the (android) ring app installed and a "tile setup in Imperihome that i can use to launch the ring app to respond to a motion or actual ring.

That setup works really good though. I can usually launch it fast enough to see what’s going-on at the front door.

If you still need details on how to set that up let me know.

Can you explain what you’re doing please?

My wife put a ring doorbell on her wishlist for Christmas but I really want something more integrated and was looking at the Door Bird but I’m confused. I hate to spend several hundred dollars on something that doesn’t have an open api or other way to integrate with my Vera Plus.

All I’m doing is launching the ring app from withing Imperihome. There is no integration with Vera. I’m assuming you are familiar with Imperihome??

you will have to setup the doorbell (if you buy it) with the ring app installed on your phone; that will create the “master” account. Then from there, you create users (i created one called “control panel”). Then i installed the ring app on my wall-mounted android tab and signed-up as the user “control panel” and made sure everything was working. Then you go to imperihome and setup a button to launch the ring app (as in the pic)

I don’t feel a need to have the video displayed all the time (much less in Vera) because with the button, the video comes-up pretty quick. And neither do i feel a need for Vera to do anything when the doorbell detect motion or somebody rings the bell; believe me, when that doorbell rings, you WILL hear it! the doorbell itself rings, the chimes in the house rings, and the app rings. My porch lights are always on from dusk till dawn so i don’t need Vera to turn on no lights either.

Works for me.

I have been using the Ring product for a number of months - as a standalone - we still have our old doorbell - which some people push, instead of the ‘Ring.’

However, when they are standing in front of the Ring unit, it will tell me they are there, even if I cannot hear the old doorbell in my office.

I stand by for some Vera integration. In the mean time, it’s pretty useful.

Does any company have the option for the guest who knocks rather than pushing the button? Other than a whack to the head ::slight_smile: ;D[/quote]

I guess what I really want to do is have local control over the video from the ring and be able to trigger another camera on the porch with it and tie that into the Vera UI7 and/or a DVR system. I also don’t like the concept of paying a monthly fee to use a doorbell. I’ve been looking also at the Zmodo Greet and the GBF Global and Yale Look.

I see the Ring can be controlled with Wink and there’s a Wink Plugin for Vera. Do you need to have the Wink Hub or does the plug in emulate the Wink Hub in the Vera? Thanks.

While the Ring doorbell does integrate into the Wink app, it does so through their API. The only thing you can see from Wink is recorded video that is stored on Ring servers. It’s locked down so they can make the $30/year for cloud recording per device. The Wink Connect plugin will populate the doorbell button and the motion sensor into Vera and allow you to use them but no access to video.

You don’t need a Wink hub since all of this is done through the cloud. You can download the Wink app and sign up for an account and add any Wifi device and control them through the Wink app.

Thanks for the precise explanation of how this works. Much appreciated.

The more I read about Ring, the more I keep looking elsewhere… Any other suggestions.

Hi Sammy,

You are lucky as i have not been able to connect the Ring at all. I love the Ring product and know many that purchased on since i have. In my case i only need the motion and door bell part. I have other cameras that can pickup the feed. The big thing is outside motion sensor, you can have lights go on or etc.

Thanks

For folks that have the Ring, can you leave your old school chime in place and have it ring (the old solenoid type), or do you have to bypass the chime and loop it back in with their adapter? I have seen lots of complains on the Ring website that there are several seconds of delay from when folks press the button, and you hear the chime.

Are you saying that you can get the motion sensor in the ring to turn on lights and other cameras? I’m confused. Thanks.

@Sammy2
If you add the Ring to your Wink account (you need a iOS or Android device to run the Wink App which will allow you to create a Wink account and add the Ring), then install the Wink Plug-in from Cybrmage on your Vera, It will add the Ring’s motion sensor and button as a device in the Vera. You will then be able to use the Ring’s motion sensor or Button press as a trigger for a Vera Scene (or PLEG). With the scene you can turn on lights, or anything else you could normally do from a scene (or PLEG if you use that).

The Ring to Wink to Vera integration does not allow you integrate the video feed.

But could it be used to trigger another security camera with the Vera Plus?

I like the concept here but not the cost of an annual subscription.

I’m seriously looking at the Yale Look but the Z-Wave version won’t be out for at least a month from now. There’s no annual subscription with the Yale Look and all the data can be stored locally, under my control.

If you can normally trigger your camera from a Vera scene it will work. It depends on the camera you have and how you have integrated it with Vera.

Hello

In regards to using the button from ring within pleg to do something. I am being asked what the button number that is being pressed will this be 1

Thanx in advance

Bit more info re above I am trying to turn porch light on when button is pressed at night time. But in the conditions tab of pleg the status is showing permanently true

Yes, it is, but it will remain true, and will be updated next time it is pressed, and will again turn on the light. Just set a delay in PLEG to turn off the light after say 10 or 20 minutes.

The only issue I have found using the WINK plug in with Motion and Button to turn on the porch light, is sometimes the WINK plugin will not trip the motion sensor in VERA. Usually a LUUP reload or refresh on the wink plug in gets it to run again, but it is not reliable. At least for me it isn’t. I have tried deleting and reading the plugin to no avail. I have wink set to notifications, but sometimes it just won’t pick it up even though in the Wink iOS app, it shows it was triggered. Maybe someone knows how to solve this.
