Restore possible?

I wonder if anybody ever restored successfully a Vera. Mine lost all her data today. I tried to restore the backup files from Findvera. Nothing came back. This was the second time I would have needed to do a restore and it failed the second time.

Can you provide more information about how you lost your data? Did you use “Reset Z-Wave network”?

Well, the only unusual thing happend that morning was that Vera was disconnected two times from the ethernet network for cleaning the desk.

The Z-Wave network was still there, but all devices were “unknown” to Vera. Vera lost all data like users, locations, rooms and scenes. I was sending you two support tickets with the logs but I guess they were empty as well.

Are we certain nobody pushed the little black button on the back of Vera – twice, causing a reset? (I realize it’s a painful question, but if I could tell you guys HOW OFTEN I’VE PULLED out Vera’s POWER CORD when I was merely trying to remove her DONGLE!!)

My fingers are so large compared to the Dongle-to-Power spacing, that I might place the dongle on a M-to-F USB extension cable!

Yeah, it happened to me a number of times, usually after adding a node (device) and clicking Save, Vera crashes wiping out every possible setting. The best is to create a backup at your LOCAL machine, that way you do not have to rely on correct settings on findvera.

I wish Vera SW was more robust and reliable so it does not happen. But then again, local backup file solves this glitch.

That’s virtually impossible. Even if Vera crashes, you don’t lose your data. I’m sure something else is going on. The list of Z-Wave nodes is stored in the dongle. The only way for the nodes to get removed is to explicitly do a ‘reset zwave network’, which means either double-clicking the black button or choosing the reset z-wave network option. I know there have been reports of device disappearing, but in every case it was something the user did, except for one instance several months when there was a bug in the Vera UI that if you put the device in a room, then deleted the room, you wouldn’t see the devices anymore (they were there, but in a non-existant room). So I’m sure something else is going on. You can login to Vera and do a ‘kill’ on all the processes, remove system files, and do all sorts of malicious things to completely crash the Linux operating system, and you will never lose your data unless there’s a hardware failure.

What I recommend is to turn on Verbose logging, and the next time your data disappears, submit a trouble ticket, and we can check the logs to see what happened to the data.

g7t, just for the record, is it even possible you accidentally mashed the little black button a couple of times while re-inserting Vera’s dongle?

I know I hit it (once, not the fatal twice) before I became accustomed to being oh-so-gentle with reinsertion.

I don’t want to rule out the possibility that I pushed that button twice. My problem is that the restore was not successful. Having more than 25 devices and roughly 20 scenes, this was really painful.
