Recommendation for new security system

Hi everyone. I am planning to purchase a new security system and have done a lot of reading and think I have it right, but wanted to check a few things before I go ahead and place the order.

Currently I have a Vera3 with about 15 different devices in my home, and an old Ademco wired security system, and plan to have this professionally installed and monitored with cellular monitoring from a local company (I am aware of the DYI options)

I plan on purchasing the following from HomeSecurityStore.com:

[ul][li]KIT32-219 - DSC Power 1832 Wireless Ready Security Kit[/li]
[li]EVL-3 - Envisalink Internet Alert Module for DSC Security[/li]
[li]PK5501 - DSC Fixed LCD Keypad (Extra panel)[/li][/ul]

Here are my questions:

  1. I am purchasing the “Wireless Ready” version, even though my current alarm system is wired. Is this ok? What does the wireless ready version give me

  2. I am purchasing the EVL-3 over the DS2. I don’t see the DS2 on the HomeSecurityStore website Will the EVL-3 work?

  3. Regarding placement of the devices, the alarm box is in the master bedroom closet, and I don’t have cat5 from there to downstairs where my internet router is. My thought was to move the Vera3 into the alarm box so it can connect directly via wired Ethernet to the EVL-3/DSC and then have the Vera3 connect back to my home wireless router via the Vera3’s 802.11 capability. Any thoughts or issues on this approach?

  4. Is there anything else I need to order?

You also may wish to look at the pk5507 as the primary keypad. It is an LCD keypad that has a nice interface for operations and programming. Note it is cheaper elsewhere.

  1. Wireless Ready relates to the RFK5500ENG - LCD Full-Message Keypad w/ Wireless Receiver. This enable you to add additional wireless security devices without having to buy an additional separate wireless receiver. This enable expansion of your system without having to hardwire. Yes, this is fine.

  2. Yes, the EVL-3 will work. It is the upgraded model of the 2DS.

  3. The EVL-3 connects to the panel by 4 wires, the same way as a kepdad. I would consider having the installer run a single run to your network router location or from one of the keypads back to your network router. The primary purpose is security activity reporting and secondary for your home automation. You can place the EVL-3 is it own hidden little box and connect the EVL-3 directly to your router and this removes an additional point of failure.

Ignore the location being Australia and look at the advice when considering integrating the alarm with your Vera to provide automation. Currently you indicate you have about 15 security devices and this would enable you to add an additional 17. If you think in the long run you will grow past this, you should consider the 1864.
