Guys, apologies, new to the whole Z-Game… but I have a question, infact I have many, but I’ll start small.
I currently have a single dimmer switch, it’s IR with built in dimmer, so non-smart, non-zwave. I’m wanting to add a Z-Wave control to this switch and I’m looking at Qubino.
My question is, do I need/want the Qubino on/off, or the Qubino dimmer?
Or, do I need to remove the current dimmer switch and replace with a simple on/off, and then introduce the Qubino on/off or dimmer?
It depends. ;D Since you didn’t specify, I’ll assume that you want the light to be dimmable and that you want to set the dim level from Vera or from the wall switch.
You’ll need to use the Qubino Flush dimmer. This will allow you to dim the light. With the Qubino by itself, you can dim the light from Vera, but you cannot dim it form the wall. To be able to dim the light from a wall switch, you will need to attach a momentary(push button) type switch on the wall to control the Qubino dimmer. You can see a wiring diagram in the manual on the previously linked page.
No. You cannot use your standard IR dimmer(triac) connected to the Qubino dimmer. You can only use an On/Off(bistable/flip flop) or a momentary(monostable/push button) connected to the Qubino dimmer.
Hi, not particularly fussed about being able to dim… but, you’ve answered my Q in your last sentence. I would need to replace my IR switch with a normal switch, which is fine given the z wave will allow remote control.
Next question, are there any wiring diagrams examples for a normal UK rocker light switch.
Sine the OP is in UK, it might be worth mentioning that many UK houses don’t have a neutal wire in the switch back box. I think the Qubino requires a neutral, whereas the Fibaro dimmer can operate without if you are stuck without a neutal wire.
That’s a good idea from Z-Waver, if your light fitting has physical space.
For me, I have a mix of a Fibaro in 2-wire (no neutral) for about 3 years, but have recently put in Qubino dimmers where I’ve been able to use a neutral.
Also, having checked, my existing IR dimmers they have Live, Load & Earth…
I think going forward, I’ll have to switch to Fibaro, if they’re more no-neutral friendly, but I thought Qubino looked slightly better given their shape & size, so I ordered one just to play with.
Could I use it in a socket?
Yes, you would install it at the socket/light fixture where the neutral is.
Edit: The Qubino needs a Line, Load, and a Neutral. Somewhere in the circuit all three of these exist together. Ground/earth should be everywhere and is always assumed.
Forgive my ignorance, but in this scenario, which is the Neutral?
I understand I need to add L/N, and then also Q and I1. This is to be done at the fitting due to not having a Neutral at the switch… But what exactly goes where?
I appreciate “none of us are electricians etc…” and that all advice is exactly that, advice.
