Hoping someone can offer some help here. I have a GE Z Wave Dimmer switch (#45606) that has been working fine with a canister light over the kitchen sink. At Lowes on Sunday, we found this cool conversion kit that allows you to put a pendant light where a canister exists. The product is Portfolio’s Recessed to Pendant Lighting Kit, which can be found on Lowes website.
However, when I installed it last night _ and it’s as simple as screwing the base of the kit into the light socket _ the switch did not work. In fact, the blue status light on the switch did not light. It was fine when I reinstalled the original bulb.
Any thoughts as to why that’s happening and how I can address it? I presume it has something to do with the way the kit is wired.
I have one of these installed for my sink light working with a leviton dimmer. Make sure there are no shorts. Can you hook this up to another can light and see if it functions?
If it came with a bulb, then possibly the new bulb isn’t compatible with the Z-Wave Dimmer. The Z-Wave dimmers usually use the bulb to complete the circuit that powers the switch and its LED indicator. What kind of bulb did the Lowe’s kit come with? Can you try your old bulb in the new fixture?
It didn’t come with a bulb but takes one of the smaller candelabra-styles bulbs. I tried a couple of different ones thinking that I might have a bad bulb, but I got the same result each time.
One possibility is the wattage of the candelabra bulb. For the same reason that Z-wave switches sometimes have problems with low wattage LED bulbs the candelabra bulb could be too low wattage for the Z-wave circuit to function properly. Just a wild guess, but after looking at the fixture on the Lowe’s website I can’t see any other reason it shouldn’t work.
