Problem with GE Keypad Controller

Hi all,

I have this GE keypad: https://www.aartech.ca/zw5301-ge-gasco-45631-stick-on-wireless-zwave-controller.html

When I use it to turn on/off a device, the status doesn’t get updated instantly on my edge. Is this normal behaviour? Any way to make the status update instantly? It does update once it’s been polled by the edge.

Thanks.

This is a common question / issue people ask. There is a lot of information on this forum related to what is called instant status. GE devices do not support instant status. Only brands like Leviton, Cooper, fibaro and some Aeon devices do. The only way to solve the update issue is to use a device that supports this feature.

Hi, I’m aware of the problem with instant status and GE switches. However, the GE keypad I have does not directly control any load. I am using it to turn on/off an aeon smartswitch which does report its own status instantly if I switch it on/off manually with the physical switch. When I use the GE keypad to turn on/off the aeon smartswitch that is when the smartswitch status is not reported to the controller until the next poll.

If your aware that your keypad doesn’t support instant status and your problem is when you use the keypad it doesn’t instantly update the status, then I’m lost. In order to solve your problem you need a keypad with instant status.

I’m not trying to get the status of the GE keypad (which does not have instant status). I want the status of the aeon smartswitch which does have instant status.

My guess is that the GE keypad acts as a controller and when I press a button on it to turn on my aeon smartswitch, it communicates with the aeon directly. The aeon smartswitch thinks the main controller is triggering it so it doesn’t report its status back to the edge.

Yes this same problem happens with GE 3 way light switches. Unless you poll it when using the aux light switch it doesn’t report back until poll

I’m going to try controlling scenes on my edge instead. This will probably bypass the problem.

Instant status is Off by default on the Aeon Smartswitch. You can turn it on by setting parameter 80 to value 1:
Parameter: 80
Data Type: 1 byte dec
Default value: 0 (default - no instant update)
Possible Value: 1 (Instant update (Hail sent)) 2 (BASIC Report sent)

I was wrong. Doesn’t look like this helps. Still requires you to add switches directly via the GE keypad.

No, instant status is ON for my Aeon Smartswitch. When I press the physical button on the smartswitch, the dashboard updates immediately.

The problem only occurs when I control the smartswitch via the GE keypad. Look at my post above about my guess as to why this occurs.

Have you verified parameter 80? You post implies that you’re assuming Instant Status is On based on your button press observation. Such an assumption would probably be incorrect as the default for instant status(parameter 80) on the Aeon switches is OFF.

wow. I knew the $35 switches I was picking up at Lowe’s were too good to be true. This only affect my ability to pinpoint energy usage, but man. bummer. oh well. a good chunk of my on/off does run through vera anyway.

You’re correct I am assuming. However, I do observe different behaviour. I looked through the settings and I don’t see parameter 80 specified anywhere. I will have to try setting it when I am home.

You have to add it and a value. You can do it remotely also.
